A rocket fired from Syria hit the Turkish border town of Kilis on Thursday, wounding at least six people, including five children, officials said.
The private Dogan news agency said the rocket is believed to have been fired by ISIS group militants.
Turkey’s army said in a statement on Thursday they returned fire at ISIS targets in Syria after the rocket landed near a market place in Kilis.
Windows were shattered and dust rose from crashed concrete on a busy shopping street, footage following the attack aired by on CNN Turk showed.
The local governor, Ismail Catakli, said in a statement that six people, five of them children, were wounded in the attack.
All six of the wounded are Syrian nationals, Mayor Hasan Kara told CNN Turk, adding that none of their injuries were life threatening. Kilis is home to a large population of Syrian refugees who fled the civil war into neighboring Turkey.
Police sources said the rocket came from ISIS-controlled territory inside Syria. Since January of this year such cross-border rocket attacks have killed 21 people and wounded 80 in Kilis, security sources said.
This month Turkish tanks rolled into Syria from Kilis province, as part of Ankara’s operation, dubbed “Euphrates Shield” that has helped Turkey-back rebel sweep ISIS from a 90-km (55 miles) stretch of Turkey’s border.
