Israel's Ambassador to Washington Ron Dermer has thanked the Egyptian and Qatari governments and UN Special Coordinator for Middle East Peace Nickolay Mladenov for helping improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

"The Government of Israel thanks the UN’s Mladenov, Egypt and Qatar for their efforts to improve the situation in Gaza and hopes that a long term agreement can be reached that will both maintain Israel’s security and enable Gaza’s development," he wrote on Twitter.

Dermer's tweet came following Qatar’s announcement that the second installment of $15 million in funds is expected to be delivered to Hamas movement in the impoverished enclave this week so that it pays the salaries of its employees.

Alongside Gaza's civil servants, the Qatari funding will also go to families of Palestinians killed or wounded during clashes with the Israeli army on the Gaza border since March, sources in Tel Aviv said.

The first Qatari payout of $15 million in November stirred controversy inside Israel. Several residents of communities lying near the enclave have filed a lawsuit at Israel's High Court of Justice, calling for a ban on the transfer of the second installment of Qatari funds.

The November payment was made in cash through suitcases transported by Ambassador Mohammed Al-Emadi. But the second is expected to be made through bank transfers.
