Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused Washington of sponsoring and directly standing behind the emergence of terrorist groups in Syria to justify its military meddling in the country.

Speaking during a press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Mohammad Hussein, Lavrov said: “The Americans are fighting a terrorist threat that they have largely created themselves.”

Lavrov continued that the “interference of the US and its allies in Iraq, and Syria has not improved life in any of these countries. It has just created problems that their citizens, politicians, and governments are now compelled to resolve. It is very important for US leaders to avoid similar foreign ventures in the future, especially since they create serious threats for the entire region.”

He added that many of the terrorists including ISIS members who got involved in aggressive acts in Syria, Iraq and other countries have been arrested.

“We believe they should be taken to court either in the countries they came from, Syria, or in the country they committed their terrorist crimes in. Any other alternative would be illegal,” the Russian FM continued. “We urge our Western and other colleagues not to create legal conflicts. Take them to court yourselves if they are your citizens, or have the country where they committed the crime try them,” Lavrov stated.

Russia will not allow a "rebranding" of terrorists in Syria, which is financed by several Western countries, Russian permanent envoy to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told a Security Council meeting on Syria Wednesday.

"It is public now that certain Western states are providing large funds to media campaigns of the backers of forceful toppling of the legitimate Syrian government."

Russia made no official comment on the complaint filed by Israel to the Security Council against Iran’s endeavors to reposition in the south of Syria.
