The Moroccan Health Ministry announced on Sunday a decision to expand its COVID-19 vaccination campaign to include citizens aged 45 to 50 years.

The Ministry called on all residents in the targeted category to participate in the vaccination campaign to reach herd immunity to coronavirus.

It said people should continue to strictly respect preventive measures and wear face masks, even after being vaccinated.

Until last Saturday, more than 6.17 million Moroccans have been vaccinated and over 4.5 million have already received their second jab, the ministry revealed in its daily report.

Morocco has confirmed 127 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, while 297 Covid-19 patients have recovered, the ministry announced on Sunday.

The total number of COVID-19 cases reported since the outbreak of the virus reached 514,944 with 503,181 recoveries.

The total number of coronavirus-related deaths stood at 9,098.

Morocco kicked off its coronavirus vaccination campaign last January after receiving its first shipments of vaccine doses from China's Sinopharm and Anglo-Swedish AstraZeneca.
