Tel Aviv - Asharq Al-Awsat

Parts of the wall that Israel set up to separate it from the occupied West Bank have collapsed.

A seven-meter section of the concrete wall collapsed on Sunday, blocking of the adjacent road.

It is believed that heavy rainfall and the accumulation of waste from the Palestinian side of the barrier led to the collapse.

Israeli police is probing the incident to rule out the possibility it could have been an intentional act.

It said that Palestinians are constantly trying to tear down segments of the wall.

The concrete wall is eight meters high and stretches 670 kilometers. It will extend to 730 kms once complete.

The Palestinians, peace movements, international organizations and the Israeli left view the construction as an "apartheid wall". The general Israeli public views it as a "security barrier".

The Israeli government approved its construction in 2002 with the aim of preventing Palestinian gunmen from reaching Israeli towns and carrying out attacks.

Indeed, the wall has led to a drop in attacks, but it has also besieged the Palestinians, deprived them of tens of thousands of dunums of land and isolated entire communities. The wall also isolated Jerusalem from the West Bank.
