Secretary General of the Sudanese Islamic Movement and former Foreign Minister Ali Karti denied the existence of any relationship between him and the Sudanese army.

In a telephone call with Asharq Al-Awsat on Friday, he said he hasn’t communicated with army commander and head of the transitional council Abdul Fattah al-Burhan in years.

He revealed that he had last met him 12 years ago.

“I have nothing to do with the army,” he stressed.

Karti is accused throughout Sudan of pulling the strings in the army through Islamist forces in the military. The army and Burhan have both dismissed the claims.

Opponents of the Islamic Movement allege that Karti was behind the October 25, 2021 coup, which was staged by Burhan.

They explain that Karti used the coup to return to Bashir loyalists funds that were confiscated from them. They were also reinstated to their state positions.

The opponents also charge that Karti and the Islamists sparked the war that erupted between the army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, in April 2023 so that they can return to power.

Karti and the Islamists deny all the accusations.

Karti also clarified claims by Hemedti last week over an alleged mediation with Burhan.

Hemedti had requested a mediation with Burhan through Karti, to which Karti said he hadn’t met with the military chief in 12 years.

He instead suggested that he communicate with someone close to Burhan. Karti did not identify the person, but he got him in touch with Hemedti and the mediation was a success.

The US special envoy for Syria Tom Barrack on Thursday warned Hezbollah against getting involved in the war between its main backer Iran and Israel.

"I can say on behalf of President (Donald) Trump... that would be a very, very, very bad decision," Barrack said, responding to a question on what the US position would be on any involvement by Hezbollah in the war.

Barrack met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at Baabda Palace and Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain el-Tineh.

Hezbollah has condemned Israel's strikes on Iran and expressed full solidarity with its leadership.

Hezbollah on Thursday expressed support for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei following threats by Israeli leaders that he could be killed.

In a statement, Hezbollah said that “threats to assassinate (Khamenei) are foolish and reckless, and will have disastrous consequences.”

But the group has stopped short of making explicit threats to intervene.

Israel's defense minister said Thursday that Khamenei "can no longer be allowed to exist" after an Israeli hospital was hit during an Iranian missile attack.

"Khamenei openly declares that he wants Israel destroyed -- he personally gives the order to fire on hospitals. He considers the destruction of the state of Israel to be a goal," Israel Katz told journalists in Holon near Tel Aviv. "Such a man can no longer be allowed to exist."

Killing Khamenei would "end the conflict" between Israel and Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said.
