GAIN Summit Honors Saudi Culture Ministry with AI Ethics Medal

The Saudi Ministry of Culture was presented with the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics Medal for 2024 in recognition of its innovative work in this area on the sidelines of the 3rd Global AI Summit 2024 (GAIN Summit), reported the Saudi Press Agency on Friday.

The summit was organized by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) and concluded in Riyadh on Thursday.

The Ministry was granted the award in recognition of its dedication to applying ethical standards to the use of AI technology. It was one of the first institutions to embrace the AI ethics project in September 2022.

The AI ethics initiative is a part of the ongoing government efforts to back Saudi Arabia’s AI national strategy. Its goals include bolstering economic growth, establishing clear guidelines for AI ethics, and supporting and promoting research and innovation in the field.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated Rabat as the World Book Capital for 2026, following a recommendation from the World Book Capital Advisory Committee.

In a recent statement, UNESCO highlighted the Moroccan capital's commitment to fostering the book industry and encouraging reading through its 54 publishing houses; it also hosts Africa's third-largest international book fair.

Rabat aims to come up with various initiatives to improve access to books, bolster the local publishing sector, and advance literacy among all age groups and demographics, both nationally and internationally.

The statement added that the celebrations are set to commence on April 23, 2026, coinciding with the World Book and Copyright Day.
