Saudi Arabia reiterated on Tuesday its unwavering support for Sudan and its people.

Speaking at the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Kingdom’s permanent representative to the UN international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Majed bin Khothaila emphasized the need to protect Sudan and its people from further destruction and the worsening humanitarian situation.

He stressed the importance of adhering to the protection of civilians and aid workers and ensuring the safety of humanitarian corridors for the delivery of essential aid.

Saudi Arabia urged the prioritization of the interests of the people and halting of the conflict to safeguard state institutions and lead Sudan to safety.

Saudi Arabia pointed to its hosting of the Jeddah talks between the parties involved in the Sudanese crisis and underscored its commitment to achieving a cessation of hostilities through political dialogue.

Furthermore, it called on the international community to commit to protecting Sudan and its people and working to restore security and stability, welcoming international efforts and initiatives aimed at achieving peace in the country.

Saudi Arabia officially reopened on Tuesday its embassy in Damascus after a 12-year closure.

Saudi Charge d'Affaires Abdullah al-Haris made the announcement during the reopening in the Syrian capital. The inauguration ceremony was attended by several senior Syrian government officials and diplomats.

Al-Haris described the reopening as a historic day in relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria.

He underscored the embassy’s keenness on exerting all possible efforts to bolster bilateral relations between Riyadh and Damascus.

Saudi Arabia had named Faisal bin Saud al-Mujfel as its ambassador to Syria months after announcing that it was restoring diplomatic ties with Damascus.

He is the Kingdom’s first ambassador to Syria since 2012.

Riyadh and Damascus announced in October that they were restoring ties, days after Syria’s membership was reinstated in the Arab League. Flights between the two countries were also resumed.
