The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has welcomed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a 30-day ceasefire in Syria.

In a press statement, OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen expressed hope that Resolution 2401, which was adopted on Saturday, would mark a turning point in finding a permanent solution to the Syrian crisis based on the Geneva process and other legitimate international decisions.

Othaimeen stressed the need for full commitment to the provisions of the resolution to end the suffering of the Syrian people, especially in Eastern Ghouta, which had come under heavy and brutal attacks on a daily basis, leaving dozens of innocent civilians dead and injured, and residential areas destroyed.

The OIC chief lauded the diplomatic efforts exerted by Kuwait and Sweden in proposing the draft resolution.
