Senior officials were among the members of Iranian militias killed in possible Israeli and American air strikes on Syria last week, revealed field sources to Asharq Al-Awsat.

The raids on Friday and Saturday struck Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) bases, headquarters and warehouses, as well as allied groups, across Syria, including near Damascus International Airport.

Preliminary reports said 12 militants, including senior members, were killed in the attacks.

Hezbollah media in Lebanon said four of its top members were killed in strikes on the al-Boukamal region near the border with Iraq.

IRGC media, meanwhile, denied that any of its members were killed in the strikes near Damascus airport.

Informed field sources, however, confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that at least two IRGC field commanders were killed.

The IRGC was holding a meeting in southern Damascus near the airport.

Local IRGC officials said a group of foreign militia leaders active in the eastern Deir Ezzor region were meeting in Damascus to discuss “some developments and plans,” sources told Asharq Al-Awsat. Some were killed and others wounded in the raid.

Five of the killed have been identified as “Al-Hajj Mahmoud”, Lebanese, who was the leader of one of Hezbollah’s most important units in Deir Ezzor; “Al-Hajj Raad”, Iraqi, who was the top Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces official in the province; “Al-Hajj Ali”, Iranian, who was the IRGC’s intelligence official in the eastern region; “Al-Hajj Nevzat”, Afghani, who was responsible for all Afghan groups in Syria; and “Al-Hajj Ali”, Iranian, who was active in Deir Ezzor.

Syrian political analyst Mohammed Hassan ruled out the possibility that the raid was a response to attacks by the so-called “Islamic Resistance” in Iraq against an American base in northeastern Syria.

He told Asharq Al-Awsat that the strikes, which he described as “sophisticated”, took place three days after senior IRGC official Reza Mousavi was killed near Damascus.

He revealed that over the past week, over a thousand fighters had poured into regions held by pro-Iran militias in Deir Ezzor.

Hassan, who hails from the province and is an expert in monitoring extremist groups and Iranian militias, said the raids against the militias last week were most likely American.

The US was probably responding to the massive reinforcements in Deir Ezzor. The attacks near Damascus airport were probably carried out by Israel, he added.

The Executive Council of the Conference of Ministers of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs condemned the deliberate Iranian attacks on Saudi Arabia, the Gulf and Jordan, accusing Tehran of seeking to destabilize the region, terrorize civilians, kill innocents and target homes, infrastructure, desalination plants, airports and diplomatic missions.

In a statement after a virtual meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the council said the attacks violated Islamic values and principles, good neighborliness, international treaties and international law, and posed a threat to international peace and security.

The council said the attacks could not be justified under any pretext and called on Iran to halt them immediately and stop supporting, funding or arming affiliated militias.

Saudi Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance and Chairman of the council Sheikh Dr. Abdullatif Al Alsheikh urged condemnation of the heinous attacks by Iran and its militias on Saudi Arabia, Gulf Cooperation Council states and Jordan.

He said the attacks violated Islamic principles and international laws, undermined regional security and reflected a reckless attempt to push the region toward chaos and strife.

Alsheikh said Saudi Arabia and its leadership were capable of defending the country, protecting Islamic holy sites and confronting any threat to its security and resources.

The Kingdom had strengthened national unity, with citizens rallying behind the leadership and supporting its decisions, he added.

In remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat, the minister said the meeting came at a time of “abnormal circumstances” in the Muslim world marked by rising aggression.

He accused Iran of carrying out daily hostile acts, including launching drones and missiles without justification toward Saudi Arabia, Gulf states and Jordan, and said those countries remained steadfast, strong and aware of their responsibilities toward their religion, leadership and nations.

The US embassy in Beirut said on ‌Friday ‌that Iran ‌and its aligned armed groups "may intend to target universities ‌in Lebanon".

In ‌a security ‌alert, ‌the embassy also ‌urged US citizens to depart Lebanon "while commercial flight options remain available".

Lebanon was dragged into the conflict in the Middle East when Iran-backed Hezbollah shot rockets at Israel in retaliation to the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei at the beginning of the war.

Over the past 24 hours, Israeli strikes killed 23 people and wounded 98, the Lebanese health ministry said Friday.

The ministry said that the overall death toll includes 125 children and 91 women, since Israel launched intense airstrikes across Lebanon after the Hezbollah fired rockets toward northern Israel in solidarity with Iran on March 2. The strikes have also wounded 4,138 others.

Among those killed are 53 health workers, while Israeli strikes have targeted 83 emergency medical service facilities, the health ministry said.

Yup, she wore something blue.

Zendaya, surprising precisely nobody on the planet, showed up in dazzling blue at Thursday’s New York premiere of “The Drama,” after teasing the bridal theme for weeks by wearing something old, then something new, then something borrowed.

Her strapless Schiaparelli Haute Couture ball gown, accompanied by sapphire earrings, completed the sartorial series just in time for the opening of her movie — a film that has attracted considerable controversy and mixed reviews. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson play a couple whose wedding plans go seriously awry following a dark revelation.

The high-fashion appearances have also echoed the bridal theme of Zendaya’s own life, with unconfirmed speculation flying — fed in part by rings she’s been wearing — that she’s already married to partner Tom Holland.

The actor and her stylist, Law Roach, saved the most spectacular outfit for last. Schiaparelli posted on its own Instagram that the gown, which took some 8,000 hours of work, was made of blue and black raw silk “feathers” in satin stitch embroidery, and contained 27 shades of blue.

“Something old” came in Los Angeles on March 17, where Zendaya wore the same white, off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood Bridal gown that she’d worn to the 2015 Oscars.

She transitioned to “something new” at the March 24 Paris premiere — a white custom Louis Vuitton gown with a huge black bow and train.

“Something borrowed” came two days later in Rome, a black Armani Privé dress previously worn by Cate Blanchett, with a plunging neckline framed with stones.

Finally on Thursday, Zendaya completed the circle. “SomethingBlue,” posted Roach.

In case nobody had noticed.
