Egypt has been exerting efforts to achieve rapprochement between rival Libyan parties, with informed sources revealing that Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar was invited to visit Cairo.

The sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that a similar invitation was made to head of the Government of National Accord Fayez al-Sarraj.

It was unclear if arrangements were made for the two rivals to meet.

“Cairo’s efforts to bridge the gap between the various Libyan powers are ongoing and they have never stopped,” an Egyptian official told Asharq Al-Awsat without offering further details.

The United Nations mission in Libya had said that its envoy, Ghassan Salame, had held talks in Cairo with Libyan parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh on the latest developments in the country. They also tackled the efforts parliament was exerting to push forward the political process.

Salame had also held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shokri and Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit.

In Tripoli, the higher council of state announced that it had approved the mechanism that will be adopted to choose new members of the Presidential Council, which will succeed the Sarraj-headed council.

It agreed to restructure the council to include a president and two deputies.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister in the GNA Mohammed Siyala announced that he had received an official invitation from Italy to attend next month’s international conference on Libya.

The conference will be held in Palermo on November 12 and 13.
