Egypt is gravely concerned over the escalation in the Middle East, including the Israeli air attack on Iran, and condemns all measures that threaten regional stability, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

"Egypt is following with grave concern the accelerating escalation in the Middle East, the latest of which was the Israeli attack on Iran this morning, and condemns all actions that threaten the security and stability of the region,” it said.

The Israeli army attacked military targets in Iran with a series of pre-dawn airstrikes Saturday in retaliation for the barrage of ballistic missiles Iran fired upon Israel earlier in the month.

"Egypt stresses its position that a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip should be reached quickly within the framework of a deal through which hostages are released given that it is the only way to de-escalate," Saturday's statement said.

Egyptian national carrier EgyptAir said it had cancelled flights to Iraq's capital Baghdad and northern city of Erbil on Saturday, citing regional developments.

A flight to Jordan's capital Amman on Saturday was also cancelled, EgyptAir said, adding that the suspension would last until the situation stabilizes.

The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday "strongly warned against any attempts to dismantle or diminish" the operations and mandate of the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA after Israel passed a law banning its operations.

In a statement adopted by consensus, the 15-member body expressed grave concern over the legislation adopted by the Israeli parliament on Monday, Reuters reported.

The council "urged the Israeli Government to abide by its international obligations, respect the privileges and immunities of UNRWA and live up to its responsibility to allow and facilitate full, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian assistance in all its forms into and throughout the entire Gaza Strip."
