Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for talks in Moscow on Wednesday, as the Kremlin seeks to secure the future of military bases vital for its operations in the Middle East.

Russia was a key ally of Sharaa's predecessor Bashar al-Assad during the bloody 14-year Syrian civil war.

His toppling at the hands of Sharaa's opposition forces dealt a major blow to Russia's influence in the region and threw the status of its prized military bases in Syria into doubt.

Putin has been working to build relations with Sharaa since, though Russia's continued sheltering of Assad and his wife in Moscow remains a major obstacle to improving ties.

"Much has been accomplished in terms of restoring our interstate relations," Putin said in a televised meeting with Sharaa.

"We have closely monitored your efforts to restore Syria's territorial integrity and I want to congratulate you on the momentum this process is gaining," Putin said, apparently referring to Sharaa's recent offensive against Kurdish forces in Syria's northeast.

Sharaa, in his second meeting with Putin since coming to power, said Russia had a "historic role not only in Syria's unity and stability, but in that of the entire region."

Neither mentioned Russia's military presence in Syria, though Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier he had "no doubt" the issue would come up in their talks.

Russia has two remaining military outposts in the country, the Hmeimim airbase and Tartus naval base on Syria's Mediterranean coast.

They are Russia's only two official military bases outside the former Soviet Union.

The Kremlin withdrew its forces from the Qamishli airport in Kurdish-held northeast Syria earlier this week.

Syria has expressed a willingness to cooperate with Moscow, though has repeatedly demanded that Russia extradite Assad.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday praised Sharaa as "highly respected" and said things there were "working out very well".

Diaa Jaafar, the investigating judge at Iraq’s Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court, announced on Sunday that authorities had seized $20 million and recovered 60 kilograms of gold in a corruption case involving suspended Deputy Oil Minister for Refining Affairs Adnan al-Jumaili.

In a statement released by Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council and reported by the German Press Agency (dpa), Jaafar said that, in coordination with the Kurdistan Region, authorities had seized $20.34 million, 200 million Iraqi dinars, and seven vehicles, in addition to recovering 60 kilograms of gold.

The seizures were made as part of the case against Jumaili and other individuals allegedly involved in the corruption scheme.

He said that follow-up and investigative efforts to recover funds obtained through squandering and irregularities in projects carried out by the defendant and others involved in the case led to the seizure of the cash, gold jewelry and vehicles.

The judge said the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are pursuing other suspects before completing the necessary legal procedures against them.

A Hamas delegation, chaired by the group’s leader Khalil al-Hayya, is in Cairo Sunday for Gaza ceasefire-related talks with Egyptian officials, the group said.

The talks come as mediators push for the implementation of a roadmap to move forward with US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, which calls for the disarmament of Hamas and other Palestinian groups in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area as well as handing over power to Palestinian technocrats.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected Trump’s latest plan to advance the stalled ceasefire in Gaza, saying Israel will not withdraw from any of the roughly 60% of the territory it controls until Hamas has been completely disarmed — something the group controlling the other 40% has long resisted.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether al-Hayya would meet with Trump’s son-in-law and negotiator Jared Kushner, the Board of Peace’s high representative Nickolay Mladenov, or executive board member and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who are scheduled to travel to Israel and Egypt this week.
