Saudi Arabia’s industrial sector is undergoing significant transformation, heralded by numerous experts as a palpable result of recent legislations that have had a profound impact on improving performance.
These reforms have helped in fostering the growth of new industries, promoting the localization of existing ones, and bolstering their overall development.
According to recent data, the industrial sector has experienced noteworthy growth in recent years, evident in the surge of factories within the Kingdom.
In the fourth quarter of 2022, the number of factories reached an impressive 10,518, with an estimated capital of SAR 1.428 trillion. This is a substantial increase of almost 24 % compared to the corresponding period in the previous year, which registered 8,499 factories with a capital of SAR 1.268 trillion.
The data was presented in a special bulletin issued by the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, offering a comprehensive perspective on the reality of the industrial sector in Saudi Arabia.
The bulletin highlighted the performance of existing factories and provided indicators of growth for new industrial licenses. In terms of investment volume, the leading factories are those engaged in the manufacture of chemical products, followed by non-ferrous metal products factories, and then base metal factories.
National factories dominated the list of factories in terms of investment type, accounting for over 84%, surpassing foreign factories by 8.3%, followed by joint investment factories at 8%.
Moreover, the capital city of Riyadh claimed the largest share of the total number of factories, with approximately 4,070, followed by the Eastern region with 2,411, and then the Makkah region with 2,029.
With a multitude of distinctive advantages, Saudi Arabia holds immense potential to emerge as a global frontrunner across diverse industries.
As per data provided by the World Bank, the Kingdom stands as the largest Arab nation in terms of industrial production and the industry’s contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP). Following closely behind are the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iraq in second and third place, respectively.
