Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman expressed his pride in the significant progress achieved by the Kingdom’s economy within the framework of the G20, as its ranking among G20 countries rose from 18th to 16th in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He pointed out that this progress confirms that development in the Kingdom is moving in the right direction towards achieving its goal of becoming one of the world’s top 15 economies by 2030.
Prince Abdulaziz also emphasized that Saudi Arabia is committed to enhancing its participation in the G20 summit and its various activities.
In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency during the Kingdom’s participation in the G20 summit in India, the minister reaffirmed that Saudi Arabia actively participates in various international organizations and initiatives.
Prince Abdulaziz also highlighted that energy access and clean fuel issues align with the theme of the 18th G20 Summit, emphasizing the Kingdom’s commitment to bolstering the group’s efforts to eliminate energy poverty and facilitate access to energy and clean cooking systems using cost-effective, reliable, and sustainable energy sources, regardless of their origin.
Additionally, he noted that during Saudi Arabia's presidency of the G20 in 2020, it introduced and adopted the Circular Carbon Economy approach, endorsed by G20 leaders in their meetings.
He emphasized that this approach is the most effective and practical way to empower the world, including the G20, to achieve long-term goals, including carbon neutrality, energy access, global economic growth, and prosperity.
Prince Abdulaziz recalled that among Saudi Arabia’s prominent efforts in energy transition, climate change mitigation, and improving quality of life are the “Green Saudi Arabia” and “Green Middle East” initiatives, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021.
These initiatives have received widespread international acclaim, including from the G20, for their positive and ambitious commitment to environmental protection and preservation, as well as support for global efforts to combat climate change.
He stressed that Saudi Arabia shares the world’s and the G20’s concern in developing means and policies to address the impacts of climate change, reducing its negative effects on humans and urban areas, and devising plans and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Prince Abdulaziz reaffirmed that Saudi Arabia’s clear and declared position in this regard is to focus on emissions rather than sources, within the framework of implementing the Paris Agreement.
