Libya's Zawiya refinery, the OPEC producer's biggest functioning oil refinery, resumed operations on Dec. 23, a source from the National Oil Corporation said on Wednesday, after they were halted earlier in December when fires broke out in a number of reservoirs.
Three engineers at the refinery also said it had resumed operations, Reuters reported.
The NOC source said that a force majeure, declared on Dec. 15 when fires broke out due to fighting between armed groups in the area, was lifted on Dec. 23.
The force majeure was lifted after Azzawiya Oil Refining Company said in a technical report that its assessment allowed operations to be restored, prompting NOC to order the resumption, the source added.
Zawiya refinery is about 40 km (25 miles) west of the capital Tripoli, with a capacity of 120,000 barrels per day. The refinery is connected to the country's 300,000 bpd Sharara oilfield.
