Swedish fast-fashion retailer H&M opened its first physical store in Brazil on Saturday and launched online operations in the country, where it is already producing some items locally, including footwear and beachwear, an executive said.

The short-term goal is to open four stores in Sao Paulo state over the coming months, Joaquim Pereira, H&M Brazil's country manager, said in an interview on Friday.

"This courtship with Brazil has been going on for a long time," he added, noting that the move took years of planning.

H&M aims to compete locally, but not necessarily against Chinese brands such as Shein, which often have below-average prices, the executives said.

"In Brazil there are many national brands that are very good, really very good. In terms of price, in terms of quality. I think it's a very, very competitive market, regardless of whether it's a Chinese company or a local company," said Pereira.

The company did not disclose its total investment in Brazil.

The first Brazilian store, in an upscale shopping mall in Sao Paulo, focuses on women's fashion. The second, set to open soon, will offer a wider assortment of products including women's, men's and children's clothing, accessories and shoes.

"We want to have pricing that is inclusive," said Magnus Olsson, H&M's regional manager for the Southern Hemisphere.

The company plans to increase local production while maintaining global standards, said Olsson. For now, H&M is producing shoes, beachwear and jeans in Brazil and importing the other products from different markets, including India, Bangladesh and Portugal.

The executives said H&M will eventually open stores in other Brazilian states, without elaborating.

The chain also has a 25,000-square-meter distribution center in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais that can be expanded to about 40,000 square meters.

Naomi Osaka keeps bringing the fashion in Paris.

For the walk-on before her second match at the French Open, the tennis star wore a metallic gold bomber jacket over her sequined gold playing dress, offset by an ivory train in a look that mixes sportswear with couture.

Osaka then took off the train and jacket and handed the garments to a ball kid to remove them before starting to play against Donna Vekic on Court Simonne-Mathieu on Thursday.

For her opening match two days earlier, Osaka walked on in a ceremonial black skirt and sleeveless beaded bodice before revealing her gold dress, which she said reminded her of the Eiffel Tower sparkling at night.

“Athletes are in show business,” Osaka said after beating Laura Siegemund in her opener. “Grand Slam walk-ons are the only time that I possibly feel like I’m an entertainer.”

Naomi Osaka’s taste for fashion was in the spotlight again on Tuesday at the French Open.

The tennis star walked onto Court Suzanne-Lenglen in a ceremonial black skirt and sleeveless beaded bodice, which she removed to reveal a sequined gold playing dress for her opening match.

Osaka said on Saturday that she enjoys fashion since “I don’t talk a lot, so that way I can talk through my clothes.”

She added “I am a little dramatic when it comes to my fashion sense.”

Osaka entered wearing the embellished bodice structured to recall armor, and a long pleated skirt over her playing attire for her debut in Paris this year. She then removed the over-garments before beginning to play against German opponent Laura Siegemund.

Earlier this year at the Australian Open, Osaka walked on wearing a wide-brim hat, a veil and holding a white parasol.

The four-time Grand Slam champion also recently wore a show-stopping outfit at the Met Gala in New York.

Earlier on Court Philippe-Chatrier, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka wore two necklaces with diamonds for her opening win.

US apparel brand ‌Everlane said on Friday it had reached an agreement to be acquired by online retailer Shein, giving the fast-fashion company ownership of a brand known for sustainability and supply-chain transparency.

Everlane will remain independent, its CEO Alfred Chang said in a statement, adding that the brand will hold its sustainability commitments while expanding to a global reach through ‌the deal.

Shein has ‌long admired Everlane and ‌plans to use the brand to enhance its own image of just affordable fast-fashion and drive cross-selling opportunities, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, adding that there were multiple bidders for Everlane.

Puck News first reported the deal and said it values the brand at ‌about $100 million on ‌Sunday, adding that shareholders with common stock in Everlane ‌would not receive a payout.

L Catterton, ‌the majority owner of Everlane, and Shein have yet to respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Companies such as Shein and Temu have disrupted ‌retail markets through aggressive pricing, heavy marketing and tax loopholes that initially gave them an edge over local players.

Shein plans to invest in growing Everlane and is expected to keep its physical stores open for now, according to the source, even though brick-and-mortar retail is not central to its business model.

At the same time, the company's faster production cycles and ability to quickly bring new products to market could support Everlane's operations.
