Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said on Tuesday he discussed with French President Emmanuel Macron the future of the Palestinian cause, saying it was the “cornerstone of Qatar's international and regional concerns.”

The leaders met in Paris during Sheikh Tamim’s two-day official state visit to France.

In a post on his official X account, Sheikh Tamim said he held “fruitful talks” with Macron on strengthening “our strategic partnership in accordance with a comprehensive bilateral cooperation that elevates our common aspirations.”

“We discussed the future of the Palestinian cause as it is the cornerstone of Qatar's international and regional concerns, and we are exerting every effort to stop the war in Gaza and deliver aid to our brothers,” he added, according to the Qatari state news agency (QNA).

“The world sees a genocide of the Palestinian people. Hunger, forced displacement, savage bombardments are used as weapons. And the international community still hasn't managed to adopt a unified position to end the war in Gaza and provide the strict minimum of protection for children, women and civilians,” he later added at a dinner banquet thrown by Macron in his honor.

Sheikh Tamim had arrived in Paris on Tuesday to meet senior officials and bolster cooperation between Qatar and France and tackle regional and international issues of interest.

The Kuwaiti Cabinet on Tuesday approved a draft decree inviting voters to elect National Assembly (parliament) members on April 4, 2024, and referred it to Emir Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, said the government spokesman.

The spokesman made the statement following a cabinet meeting.

Last Wednesday, the government issued a decree law suspending the election commission law until the beginning of October.

On Feb. 15, Kuwait’s Emir dissolved the parliament after it declined to remove remarks made by a lawmaker that were deemed disrespectful to the ruling authority.

The Emiri decree cited the Assembly’s breach of constitutional principles, particularly regarding the disrespect of esteemed positions and the deliberate use of disrespectful and offensive language by the parliament’s members.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, stressed on Tuesday the Kingdom’s keenness on supporting all international efforts aimed at resolving the Ukrainian-Russian crisis to restore peace.

Crown Prince Mohammed received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Riyadh.

He added that Saudi Arabia will continue efforts to ease the impact of the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict.

Crown Prince Mohammed and Zelenskyy discussed cooperation between their countries and the latest developments in the conflict.

Zelenskyy praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts towards resolving the crisis.

Ukraine continues to “rely on Saudi Arabia's ongoing active support” in pushing forward with what has been described as a “Peace Formula” to end the full-scale invasion, which marked its second anniversary over the weekend, Zelenskyy said in a message on X, formerly Twitter, before he arrived in Riyadh.

Zelenskyy has presented a 10-point peace formula that, among other things, seeks the expulsion of all Russian forces from Ukraine and accountability for war crimes — at a time when the two sides are fighting from largely static positions along a roughly 1,500-kilometer (930-mile) front line. Such ideas are rejected out of hand by Moscow.

“The second topic is the return of POWs and deportees,” Zelenskyy wrote. “The Kingdom’s leadership has already contributed to the release of our people. I am confident that this meeting will also yield results.”

He added that economic cooperation also would be discussed in Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom has previously acted as a mediator in prisoner swaps between Ukraine and Russia.

Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will kick off on Tuesday a two-day state visit to France where he will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron.

In a statement on Monday, the Elysee palace said the visit will be an opportunity to deepen bilateral relations in defense, security, investment and the economy.

They will also seek to bolster cultural relations and deepen cooperation in development.

Sheikh Tamim is traveling to France at the head of a large ministerial and economic delegation.

The statement also hailed the consultations between France and Qatar over regional and international affairs.

This will be Sheikh Tamim’s first state visit to France since he ascended the throne in 2013.

Sources at the Elysee said the developments in Gaza and the political deadlock in Lebanon will be one of the main focuses of the talks between Qatari and French officials.

The sources added that Paris recognizes Doha’s role in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, releasing hostages held by Hamas and the “Islamic Jihad” and reaching a ceasefire in the conflict.

French sources said Paris is therefore keen on bolstering its relations with Qatar.

In addition, the crisis in Lebanon will also feature during Sheikh Tamim’s visit as Qatar and France are members of the Quintet on Lebanon that also includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United States.

The committee is helping Lebanon end the deadlock over the election of a new president, which is growing more pressing as tensions mount between Hezbollah and Israel along the southern border.

Observers in Paris have said France will urge Doha to continue to provide financial support to the Lebanese army, whose commander has visited Doha on a number of occasions and is understood to have good ties with its authorities.

France believes the army is a major player who can de-escalate the tensions and avert a full-scale war between Hezbollah and Israel.

Improved security will also help combat drug dealing and abuse and various other crimes, they added.

He said the Saudi leadership hopes the outcomes of the meeting will help bolster joint Arab security in the present and for the future.
