Qatar announced on Thursday the resumption of ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, after a halt last month because of frustration over a lack of progress, a source told the Agence-France Presse on Friday.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Qatar "has now reactivated the mediation talks”, but he provided no details about the recent meetings with officials from the warring parties.
On Wednesday, a well-informed source told Reuters that Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff met separately in recent weeks with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss Gaza ceasefire talks.
Qatar has “resumed its role as a key mediator after suspending that role last month”, the source had said, adding that negotiators from the Hamas movement are likely to return to the Qatari capital, Doha, to facilitate a new round of talks soon.
