King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) Supervisor-General Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah called for urgent action to address the global displacement crisis, emphasizing the need to uphold everyone’s right to peace and dignity.
Speaking at a dialogue session on addressing record levels of displacement on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Al Rabeeah stated that the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide in 2024 exceeded 123 million, or one in every 67 people, SPA reported.
He cited Sudan, with over 14 million displaced, as the largest crisis, alongside Yemen, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Afghanistan.
Al Rabeeah stressed that conflicts are the primary cause of displacement and that humanitarian aid will never suffice unless these conflicts are resolved and prevented.
He affirmed that the Kingdom has responded with decisive diplomatic action and significant humanitarian support. This includes tireless efforts to address the root causes of displacement through dialogue and mediation, calls for lifting sanctions on Syria, condemnation of attempts to displace the Palestinian people, and strong support for the two-state solution.
Al Rabeeah noted that the UN has confirmed the famine and genocide being perpetrated against the Palestinian people, calling these practices unacceptable and demanding urgent action.
He highlighted Saudi support for refugees, which exceeds $1.2 billion through 457 relief projects. KSrelief alone has implemented 362 projects valued at $502 million to support displaced persons, refugees, and host communities.
Al Rabeeah called on member states to redouble efforts to resolve conflicts, adhere to international humanitarian law, increase support, and ensure efficient use of resources along with strong local leadership in humanitarian responses.
