Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha expressed on Monday the organization’s solidarity with Afghanistan following the earthquake that struck the country’s northern region early this morning.
Taha called on OIC member states and humanitarian organizations to provide urgent support to those affected by the disaster.
He also instructed the OIC office in Afghanistan to coordinate with local authorities and work closely with OIC humanitarian agencies and partners to deliver essential aid and relief to the victims.
A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook northern Afghanistan before dawn Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 640 others.
The numbers of people killed or injured could rise, officials said.
