Clashes renewed in the Palestinian refugee camp of Mieh Mieh in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon on Thursday between the Fatah movement and Ansarallah group.
The fighting erupted hours after President Michel Aoun confirmed that the army would continue to take the necessary measures to maintain security and stability in the area.
Security sources told the Central News Agency (CNA) that the clashes were aimed at preventing the army from completing its deployment in the camp.
In order to reach an urgent ceasefire inside the camp, MP Bahia Hariri followed up on the developments, conducting a series of contacts with Lebanese and Palestinian security officials.
The Mieh Mieh refugee camp, located about 2 km away from Ain el-Hilweh refugee camp, is witnessing a struggle between the Fatah and Ansarallah group over leadership.
Earlier this month, a personal dispute developed into violent clashes and armed confrontations between the two sides, during which rockets were used.
Following the renewal of unrest this week, the Lebanese army on Wednesday deployed across the perimeter of the refugee camp after it cleared some technical and logistical obstacles, the National News Agency reported.
Aoun met on Thursday with Archbishop Elie Haddad of Sidon and Deir el-Qamar, who was accompanied by a delegation from Mieh Mieh village.
Talks reportedly touched on the general situation, as well as on the most recent security developments inside the camp.
“The army will continue to take the necessary measures to maintain security and stability in the Mieh Mieh region, especially in wake of a number of security incidents that have shaken the refugee camp and its surroundings,” Aoun told the delegation.
“The situation inside the camp is also being handled to remove the causes that led to the turbulence and prevent confrontation between the residents,” he added.
