Bahrain hosted a conference on Gulf maritime security on Wednesday, after multiple attacks on shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz sent tensions soaring between Iran and the US.

Manama said the meeting was held "to discuss the current regional situation and to strengthen cooperation".

In a statement, it slammed "the repeated attacks and unacceptable practices of Iran and the terrorist groups linked to it."

In light of the recent challenges and threats facing the region, Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, stressed the importance of regional and international cooperation, calling upon the international community to assume its role in deterring all threats that target international security and peace.

The closed-door meeting was confirmed by the British Defense Ministry and a spokesman for the US Marines' 5th Fleet on Tuesday. The ministry declined to give details about the agenda, but said that "several international partners" would be participating.

The Guardian reported this week that the UK had called for the meeting in Bahrain with other European countries and the US.

Bahrain said earlier this month that it and the US would co-host another conference on "maritime and air navigation security", set for October.

Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Wednesday that his country will not participate in a US-led naval security mission in the Gulf.

Washington asked Berlin to help safeguard shipping in the Strait of Hormuz after Iran's recent seizure of a British-flagged oil tanker.

"The German government will not take part in the maritime mission presented and planned by the United States," Maas said while on an official trip to Poland.

He said Germany disagreed with Washington's approach towards Iran and is not seeking a military escalation to the crisis.

The US and Britain have been seeking to establish a mission to prevent Iran from seizing further oil tankers, after Tehran impounded the British-flagged Stena Impero and the Panama-flagged MT Riah in mid-July in the Strait of Hormuz.

Several EU member states have expressed an interest in the proposal to ensure safe travel of cargo.

Although the meeting between Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in NEOM on Thursday lasted only a few hours, its impact resonated widely online. The visit sparked a wave of positive reactions across social media platforms, with many commentators describing it as a strategic step underscoring the strength of ties between Riyadh and Cairo and reflecting the “enduring bonds” that unite the two nations.

According to a statement from Egyptian presidential spokesman Mohamed El-Shennawy, the talks covered a wide range of bilateral cooperation issues as well as regional and international developments of mutual concern. Discussions included Egypt’s efforts, in coordination with various parties, to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.

Social media users widely shared images and video clips of the visit, particularly Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s warm welcome for Sisi at NEOM Palace. Other moments that drew attention included the Crown Prince personally driving President Sisi in his car and the cordial farewell at the foot of the aircraft steps, which many said spoke volumes about the depth of the historic and strategic relationship between Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Dozens of accounts pointed that the meeting symbolized the unity of “two brothers” who represent the heart and wing of the Arab world and serve as key pillars of stability in the region. Others emphasized that Saudi–Egyptian relations carry significant political and economic weight, forming a cornerstone of joint Arab action at a time of mounting regional and international challenges.

Many users also expressed optimism that the meeting could bring positive change to the Middle East, noting that coordination between Riyadh and Cairo is vital for enhancing security and stability.

In his remarks during the talks, Sisi reiterated Egypt’s support for Saudi initiatives on the Palestinian issue, including the outcomes of the recent “Two-State Solution Conference” held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France.

The presidential statement added that Sisi conveyed his deep appreciation for the warm reception and generous hospitality he received, affirming the strong bonds of affection and respect that Egypt’s leadership and people hold for Saudi Arabia and the close historic ties binding the two countries.

According to the Egyptian presidency, the talks between the two leaders also included “in-depth discussions on a number of bilateral cooperation files.”

The Muslim World League (MWL) warned the international community of the grave consequences of Israel's ongoing criminal practices and its persistence in committing horrific violations with deliberate disregard for all international and humanitarian laws and norms.

The warning came after the shocking official declaration that Gaza City has entered a state of famine, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday.

In a statement, MWL Secretary-General and Organization of Muslim Scholars Chairman Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Al-Issa stressed that Israel's extremist government poses a serious threat to the Palestinian people in particular, and to the region and the international community at large. He said it represents the greatest obstacle to all efforts aimed at halting the war, protecting civilians, and achieving the just, comprehensive, and lasting peace that all aspire to for the region.

Al-Issa renewed the MWL’s urgent call for the international community to shoulder its moral and legal responsibilities and take swift, serious action to end the famine and genocide being committed against the people of Gaza, and to stop the war machine of the occupation government, which has persisted in its tyranny and disregard for the lives, rights, and human dignity of the Palestinian people.
