Bahrain has appointed the head of the Gulf Cooperation Council as the country’s next foreign minister, state media reported Thursday.

The Bahrain News Agency reported that Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa named Abdullatif al-Zayani as the foreign minister.

Local media reported al-Zayani will assume the post when his term as secretary general of the GCC ends on March 31.

He will be replacing Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, who’s been Bahrain’s foreign minister since 2005.

Sheikh Khalid, who confirmed the news on Twitter and congratulated al-Zayani, will serve as diplomatic adviser to the king.

The Muslim World League (MWL) expressed its appreciation for the directive of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, issued upon the recommendation of Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to ensure that Iranian pilgrims receive all necessary services and support until they can safely return to their homeland and families.

In a statement to Saudi Press Agency (SPA), MWL Secretary-General and Organization of Muslim Scholars Chairman Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa praised the royal directive as a continuation of the Kingdom's longstanding commitment to ensuring the comfort, care, and well-being of pilgrims to the two holy mosques, and to meeting their needs until their safe return to their countries.

He prayed to Allah Almighty to greatly reward the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince for their outstanding services to the two holy mosques, their visitors, and the entire Islamic nation, and to continue bestowing honor, security, and prosperity upon the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
