Algerian authorities allowed former Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, who is serving a 15-year prison sentence on corruption charges, to attend the funeral of his brother al-Aifa Ouyahia.
Ouyahia appeared for the funeral in Garidi Cemetery, wearing a mask, handcuffed, and surrounded by policemen.
Members and supporters of the banned Islamic Salvation Front protested the authorization allowing Ouyahia to attend the funeral. Some social media accounts also pointed out that authorities banned the former leader of the Front, Ali Benhadj, from attending the funeral of his sister who died during his imprisonment period between 1991 and 2003.
A judicial source confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that a member of Ouyahia’s defense team, lawyer Khaled Bourayou, submitted a request to Justice Minister Belkacem Zeghmati asking for a temporary release to allow the former PM participate in the funeral of his brother.
The two brothers often argued about the former official’s choices in supporting the former President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and the regime in general.
The funeral was attended by a large number of lawyers, judges, and members of the Ouyahia family.
Al-Aifa died from a heart attack at his home on Sunday evening. Earlier that day, he was in court pleading for his brother, where he challenged corruption charges in the case of businessman Ali Haddad.
Lawyers at the court said al-Aifa felt short of breath after completing his trial and left the session before it ended.
He was a member of his brother’s defense team during the trial last September, which ended with a 15-year prison sentence.
Former Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment in the same case on corruption charges relating to his term in government during Bouteflika's rule between 1999 and 2019.
