The Iraqi judiciary issued on Monday death sentences and a life imprisonment against a so-called ISIS “mufti”.
The criminal court in the Salaheddine province issued four death sentences and one life imprisonment against the ISIS member, whose identity was not revealed.
It accused him of taking part in several terrorist operations, including detonating an explosive device against an army patrol. Five soldiers were killed in the attack.
Along with accomplices, he was found guilty of kidnapping a citizen and taking part in an ISIS attack on Amerli among other crimes.
The “mufti” can appeal the sentences.
Elsewhere, the Military Intelligence Directorate announced the arrest of the so-called ISIS administrative official in the al-Anbar province west of Baghdad.
A media statement said that the suspect was arrested during a security raid after information was received that he was present in the Abu Ghraib region.
Authorities were tipped off about his whereabouts by another ISIS suspect who is in detention.
Meanwhile, Iraqi legal expert Ahmad al-Abadi told Asharq Al-Awsat Iraqi law does not have jurisdiction in crimes committed beyond the country’s borders, except when they are committed by ISIS.
The penal code explains how to deal with crimes committed in Iraq or abroad, he said.
ISIS members can be tried according to Iraqi law whether they commit their crimes inside the country or abroad, he added.
