Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday reasserted the country’s longstanding ban on competitive sport with Israelis, and promised support for athletes disciplined by international bodies for respecting it.

Iran does not recognize Israel and its athletes usually refrain from facing Israeli opponents, whether by forfeiting the match or by simply not participating.

But while their actions earn them praise from top officials back home, they have sometimes resulted in disciplinary measures from international bodies.

“Any Iranian athlete worthy of the name cannot shake hands with a representative of the criminal regime in order to win a medal,” Khamenei told a reception for Iran’s medalists from the Tokyo 2020 Games.

“The illegitimate, bloodthirsty... Zionist regime tries to win legitimacy by taking part in international sporting events attended by the world arrogance (Washington and the West), and our athletes cannot just stand idly by,” he added, in comments posted on his official website.

In Tokyo, Iran won seven Olympic medals, three of them gold, as well as 24 Paralympic medals.

Two years ago, an Iranian judoka, Saeid Mollaei defected after being ordered to deliberately lose at a World Cup event to avoid fighting Israeli Sagi Muki in the final.

He competed in Tokyo under the Mongolian flag, winning a silver medal for his adopted country.

The International Judo Federation suspended Iran from the sport over the Mollaei case, although the ban was cancelled earlier this year by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Another famous case was current Iranian judo federation president Arash Miresmaeili, a two-time judo world champion who showed up overweight for his bout against an Israeli at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and was disqualified.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister said Tuesday he could have left during the summer transfer window given how sad he felt at not being offered a new contract when other players were having their deals with the Premier League giants renewed.

Fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch both had their stays at Anfield lengthened, but Mac Allister said his agent was told the club was "not in a position" to offer him a contract extension.

Argentina international Mac Aliister did not have his best season with Liverpool last term, but that was equally true of several team-mates during a lackluster defense of their Premier League title that culminated in the sacking of manager Arne Slot.

Mac Allister, 27, was linked with a move away from Merseyside, including to Atletico Madrid -- the Reds' Champions' League opponents at Anfield on Wednesday.

He has two years remaining on his contract and said he is determined to continue to give "100 percent" to Liverpool's cause.

"There were options to leave this summer," Mac Allister told a pre-match press conference at Anfield on Tuesday.

"I think as everyone knows I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad."

He added: "I think I give 100 percent for this football club every single day in training, games. Of course I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best.

"I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad I didn't get mine.

"Of course, there is still time, the fans don't need to worry because I will give 100 percent until the last day I am here. We will see what happens."

"But I think right now I am in the right club and I have the right mindset to give my 100 percent to the club."

PSG Must Leave Its ‘Comfort Zone’ to Win Champions League Three-Peat, Luis Enrique Says

Coach Luis Enrique says Paris Saint-Germain will need to get out of its “comfort zone” if it is to emulate the trio of clubs that have achieved European three-peats.

PSG starts another Champions League title defense on Wednesday against Slovan Bratislava at the Parc des Princes.

Only Real Madrid (1956-60, 2016-18), Ajax (1971-73) and Bayern Munich (1974-76) have won three successive European Cup/Champions League trophies.

“Everyone is excited and motivated to play against us," Luis Enrique said on Tuesday. “We have to accept it and step out of our comfort zone. I’m ready to show that you have to reinvent yourself every day.”

PSG is not in the best possible form, taking just two points from three games in Ligue 1 and conceding six goals already.

His team’s faltering start is not enough to worry Luis Enrique. He knows very well that last season PSG needed time to find its rhythm before winning both Ligue 1 and the Champions League. Plus, PSG had to go through the Champions League playoffs over the past two seasons.

“If we only look at the results, it’s a disastrous start to the season,” he said. “But as a coach you know how to assess and judge everything that happens on the pitch. There are things to improve, but I think we deserve more points."

As for his team's leaky defense, the Spanish tactician believes working on small details will pay off if his players manage to stay focused throughout matches.

“We haven’t always been lucky whenever the opponents have taken shots. We’ve conceded some very good goals. I’m not worried,” he said. “We’ll see at the end of the season what we deserve. I’m calm, but we need to improve.”

Captain Marquinhos admitted to “a few mistakes that are not at our level.”

“As a defender, it’s especially painful when you concede goals,” he said. “We’ve conceded quite a few at the start of this season. We watched the videos and work to improve more and more. We just have to be honest and sincere with ourselves and look at what we can do better. We have a coach who is honest with us, and we know what we need to improve.”

PSG 's ambition this season is to qualify directly from the main phase of the Champions League. The club has been handed a tough draw with matches against Manchester City, Barcelona and Aston Villa.

“I put pressure on the team all the time,” Luis Enrique added. “I’d like us to finish among the top eight teams and avoid the playoffs, but with our very difficult draw you’re going to drop points. It will be like the last two years — difficult to qualify.”

In its quest for a three-peat, PSG is betting on stability. It has been the European club generating the highest transfer revenues from departures this summer — more than 400 million euros ($464 million) — but has sold only players who were used in a substitute role by Luis Enrique. The only big name to leave was France forward Bradley Barcola in the biggest signing of the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, PSG has reinforced its squad with the arrivals of Ferran Torres, Maghnes Akliouche, Mika Godts, Lucas Digne and Alessandro Longoni. The new players have not yet settled in and Luis Enrique said he was paying particular attention to them.

“We have to assess and support each player on an individual basis,” he said. “We try to provide precise information so they can adapt as quickly as possible.”

Liverpool have agreed a five-year deal for Turkish Airlines to become their main club partner from June 1, 2027, which means the first change in the Anfield side's leading shirt sponsor since 2010, ending a 17-year run for Standard Chartered.

The deal announced on Tuesday will be worth in excess of £300 million ($405.78 million) according to media reports, which would place it among the most lucrative in the Premier League.

While the precise figures have not been confirmed, it is likely to match the income from Manchester United's shirt sponsorship deal with Qualcomm, which was signed in August 2024.

Standard Chartered will remain affiliated with Liverpool as a Global Partner, said a club statement, but Turkish Airlines will take the primary position in Liverpool's branding.

“The front of the Liverpool shirt holds a special place in the history of our club," Reuters quoted Liverpool's chief commercial officer Ben Latty as saying.

"Turkish Airlines is a globally recognized organization with an extensive international network and we look forward to beginning our partnership and building a strong relationship together, with already strong foundations built from those special memories back in 2005," he added, referring to Liverpool's Champions League final comeback win in Istanbul.

The deal adds to a growing sponsorship portfolio within football for Turkish Airlines, who are an official partner of the Champions League and main sponsor of Türkiye's national team.
