Saudi Arabia and Thailand restored diplomatic ties on Tuesday during a visit to Riyadh by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

He held talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense.

They agreed to restore ties and open a new chapter in relations, said a closing statement after their official talks.

The announcement is the culmination of years of efforts to rebuild trust and friendship between them.

Crown Prince Mohammed and Prayut agreed on the importance of bolstering friendship between their countries and opening a new chapter in relations.

Prayut said his country is keen on resolving all pending issues between their countries.

He expressed his regret over the tragic events that took place in Thailand between 1989 and 1990 that affected relations with Saudi Arabia, said a statement by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

He said Thailand has exerted great efforts to resolve pending issues and is ready to raise cases before the concerned authorities should new leads emerge.

Thailand is committed to protecting the members of the Saudi diplomatic mission, he stated.

Crown Prince Mohammed and Prayut also discussed regional and international developments and ways to bolster Saudi-Thai relations in all fields.

They agreed to intensify contacts and cooperation between their countries in order to expand their bilateral ties.
