Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune dismissed on Tuesday his advisor in charge of religious associations for “breaching the duty of discretion,” the presidency said in a statement.

Aissa Belakhdar was appointed in 2020 and was part of Tebboune’s campaign team in the 2019 presidential elections. Tebboune has eight multidisciplinary advisors in his team.

Belakhdar’s dismissal charge is often directed against executive officials and judges in case they publicly engage in cases that put them in conflict with their public sector job.

Among his tasks were following up the activities of religious associations and encouraging the implementation of educational projects, especially those with social and charitable aspects.

He also accompanied and directed specialized national associations, including those that give language sciences and Sharia, formative and educational courses, scientific activities and religious-oriented artistic activities.

Belakhdar was also entrusted with the task of following up the Quranic schools, accompanying religious associations with spiritual and mystical extensions and preserving Algeria’s religious and spiritual reference.
