Head of Libya's interim Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah said only parliamentary elections can resolve the struggle for power with the government of Fathi Bashagha, who is backed by the east-based parliament

He is aiming to hold the elections in June.

Dbeibah vowed to defend the capital Tripoli if it were to be attacked.

He told an evening event in Misrata on Saturday that his government's main goal is to hold the elections and hand over power to an elected government.

All options have been exhausted to resolve the current crisis, he remarked, saying that there was nothing left but to hold the parliamentary elections.

Parliament named Bashagha to lead a new interim government in February.

The lawmakers claimed Dbeibah's mandate expired when parliamentary and presidential elections failed to take place in December 2021. Dbeibah insists he will remain in power until elections are held.
