The Research, Development and Innovation Development Authority, which was established in June 2021, is holding successive workshops to develop the national strategy for the sector, to be announced at a later stage, within efforts to achieve the aspirations of Saudi Vision 2030.

Engineer Abdulwahed Alghanem, President of the Saudi Association of the Global Innovation Institute, said that the research and innovation sector was currently witnessing systematic reconstruction, with the aim to strengthen the research and innovation system in the Kingdom, in accordance with the directions drawn by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

He stressed that the Kingdom would lead the next wave of research and innovation in the Arab world and the Middle East, thanks to the excellent Saudi competencies, government support and the strong national economic system.

Alghanem noted that the Kingdom would not stop at producing research, inventions and ideas, but would seek to achieve an actual and tangible impact and an added value at the local, regional and international levels.

“We are starting to build innovative maturity, which requires steadiness, patience and continuous work. With proper implementation, we will reach our goal within years,” he underlined.

He continued: “It will take us three to five years to build the system, and we will see some encouraging results during that period, while the actual outcomes will be fruitful during the first decade of launching the sector’s strategy.”

The new phase seeks to develop an innovative system that fulfills the purpose of its establishment, and invests in the generous government support to achieve the goal of economic prosperity, according to Alghanem.

Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Alswaha has underlined the Kingdom's pivotal role in driving the global agenda to enhance the digital economy, foster innovation, and leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to serve humanity and protect the planet.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), he highlighted that the Kingdom's international standing is a result of the support and guidance of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The minister explained that Saudi Arabia's participation in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, held from January 20 to 24, comes at a time when the world is transitioning from the digital age to the AI age.

This underscores the Kingdom's significant role in leading global efforts to promote innovation and utilize AI for the benefit of humanity.

He noted that the annual high-profile gathering provides a global platform to showcase the Kingdom's developmental, economic, and technological achievements under the framework of Saudi Vision 2030, made possible by the support of the Kingdom's leadership.

Alswaha said that Saudi Arabia is working in partnership with the international community to harness AI as a key tool for advancing sustainable development and achieving global goals, adding that these efforts aim to improve quality of life, support the digital economy, and create new job opportunities across various sectors, contributing to a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
