Oman will hold the Municipal Council elections for the third term (2023-2026) on Sunday.
They will be able to cast their vote through an application on their smartphones.
According to official figures, 731,767 people are eligible to vote through the Intakhib app to elect 126 representatives, out of 727 candidates, including 27 women, running in the polls.
The Interior Ministry had previously developed electronic methods that would facilitate the ballot count process, allowing the for a quick announcement of results. People voted in person and the votes were counted electronically. The methods were adopted during the 2012 municipal elections.
For the 2017 elections, authorities invested in technology that allowed people to register and vote online.
Muscat governorate boasts 103,949 registered eligible voters and 85 candidates of whom 12 will be elected to the Muscat Governorate Municipal Council.
Meanwhile, the Dhofar governorate has 84,818 registered voters and 145 candidates of whom 20 representatives will be elected and the al-Buraimi governorate has 16,969 voters and 20 candidates, of whom six will be elected to the municipal council.
Al Dakhiliyah governorate boasts 83,338 voters and 85 candidates, 18 of whom will be elected to the municipal council, while the North al-Batinah governorate has 148,849 voters and 97 candidates, of whom 12 will be elected.
The South al-Batinah governorate has 91,988 voters and 49 candidates, of whom 10 will be elected, the North al-Sharqiyah governorate has 63,358 voters and 45 candidates, of whom 14 will make it to the municipal council and the South al-Sharqiyah governorate has 75,729 voters and 61 candidates, of whom 10 will be elected.
Al-Dhahirah governorate, however, has 38,583 voters and 31 candidates, of whom six will be elected and al-Wusta governorate has 12,595 voters and 56 candidates, of whom eight will be elected.
Each municipal council is chaired by the governor of the respective province. The councils are tasked with addressing social issues in provinces and raising awareness over preserving nature.
