The chief of the Australian Grand Prix vowed a full investigation on Monday after fans invaded the track before the race had officially finished, saying the outcome "could have been horrific".

The sport's governing body, FIA, summoned organizers for an explanation late Sunday after the race, ruling the invasion a serious breach of the sporting code and demanding they "urgently present a formal remediation plan".

Footage showed a "large group" of the 131,000-strong crowd squeezing through barriers and climbing fences just meters from speeding cars near the conclusion of a drama-packed race won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Some were able to reach the stranded Haas of Nico Hulkenberg, which parked on the exit of Turn 2 after finishing seventh.

The FIA said: "Security measures and the protocols which were expected to be in place for the event were not enforced resulting in an unsafe environment for the spectators, drivers and race officials".

Australian Grand Prix Corporation boss Andrew Westacott said organizers were still not sure what happened, but admitted it was unacceptable.

"There's a controlled allowance of people to come onto the track after the race has concluded and after the safety car passes," he told national broadcaster ABC.

"Spectators had broken one of the lines, we don't know how that's occurred just yet."

Westacott said officials would trawl security cameras to try and find out how the breach occurred.

"We've got a lot of CCTV and we've got a huge amount of footage we're going to have to pore through over the next couple of weeks," he said. "Motorsport is dangerous... it could have been horrific.

"Nobody does anything malicious at motorsport, it's an unbelievably well-behaved crowd but they, I think, had a degree of confusion. We don't know how they got into the area without the right level of authority."

Verstappen's win, after the race was red flagged three times, extended his lead over teammate Sergio Perez in the world championship to 15 points after three grand prix.

Red Bull lead the constructors standings by 58 points ahead of Aston Martin, with Mercedes third.

Cameroon star Bryan Mbeumo scored his fourth Premier League goal this season for struggling Manchester United in a 1-1 away draw against Leeds United at the weekend.

AFP Sport highlights African headline-makers in the major European leagues:

ENGLAND

BRYAN MBEUMO (Manchester United)

Mbeumo netted to ensure under-fire United boss Michael Carrick did not suffer another damaging defeat. Mbeumo put United ahead in the 35th minute against bitter rivals Leeds at Elland Road as he slotted home a Youri Tielemans cross. Leeds hit back to rescue a draw thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin's second-half goal, but avoiding defeat was vital for Carrick after United's poor start to the season.

ALEX IWOBI (Fulham)

The Nigeria midfielder's first goal since March clinched a maiden Premier League win for Cottagers boss Alvaro Arbeloa. Iwobi netted in the 33rd minute of the 1-0 win against Hull at Craven Cottage, taking Sander Berge's pass and hitting a low strike that squirmed under Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis. That was enough to lift Fulham out of the relegation zone and give former Real Madrid manager Arbeloa some much-needed breathing space.

SPAIN

EZ ABDE (Real Betis)

Morocco international Abde scored against his former side Barcelona in Real Betis's pulsating 5-2 La Liga defeat. The 24-year-old winger produced a sharp finish early in the second half for his fourth goal in his last five matches for the Andalucian side.

BIL NSONGO (Deportivo La Coruna)

Deportivo La Coruna striker Nsongo netted his first goal of the season to secure the Galician outfit a point against Levante in a 1-1 draw. The 22-year-old Cameroon international reacted quickest to reach a rebound in the box and bundle the ball home.

ITALY

AKOR ADAMS (Venezia)

Nigerian Adams scored as bottom club Venezia ended a six-match losing steak since the Serie A season began by defeating former champions Napoli 1-0. New Venezia head coach Davide Nicola made a dream debut as Adams latched on to a long ball and scored with a deflected strike after 49 minutes.

ANGE-YOAN BONNY (Inter Milan)

The Ivory Coast forward wrapped up a 3-1 win for defending champions Inter Milan away to Bologna by scoring six minutes from time. Bonny netted after being set up by fellow substitute and scorer Carlos Augusto.

GERMANY

IBRAHIM MAZA (Bayer Leverkusen)

Leverkusen midfielder Maza continued his impressive development with a goal and an assist in a 2-1 Bundesliga home win over Freiburg. The Algerian turned in a Patrik Schick pass midway through the opening half and then created a goal for the Czech with an excellent dribble late in the game. Named man of the match, Maza said he was "building chemistry" with veteran striker Schick, the first Bayer player to score in the first six games of the season.

Alejandro Davidovich ‌Fokina waited seven years for an ATP Tour title then three came along at once.

The Spaniard, who made his tour debut in April 2019, captured the Shanghai Masters title with a 1-6 7-6(5) 6-4 win over compatriot Rafael Jodar on Sunday, earning him ‌a third career ‌trophy after his wins ‌in Chengdu last month and Mallorca in June.

"I cannot describe with words what I achieved in this Chinese swing," Davidovich Fokina, who lost his first five ATP finals, told a press conference.

"I never thought I ‌would have ‌two titles after two months out. ‌But I'm really, really happy. I ‌think my team (were) pushing me. It was difficult when I was at home, and they were pushing me ‌very hard.

"They knew that I can achieve these kind of things. So I am very grateful (for) what they have done, because they were believing in me."

The 27-year-old, whose win in Chengdu came in his first tournament back after a two-month layoff due to a back injury, has risen from number 26 in the world rankings to a career-high 13.

McLaren are selling five fully-functioning Formula One cars driven by champions, including Lewis Hamilton and the late Brazilian Ayrton Senna, with one also tested by Hollywood actor Brad Pitt.

The cars, to be sold through high-end dealer Tom Hartley Jr. and expected to raise tens of millions of dollars, will be prepared by the reigning constructors' champions for their next owners.

Hartley Jr. also sold the collection of former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and 20 road cars belonging to the late McLaren co-owner Mansour Ojjeh.

"We have decided to part with these iconic McLaren Formula One cars because we feel that having them simply sitting ‌in storage is ‌a disservice to what they represent," McLaren Racing CEO Zak ‌Brown said in a statement on Sunday.

"These cars were built to be driven and raced, and we want to see them being used and enjoyed. We believe that is the best way to keep our history alive and our heritage business active."

PITT DROVE ONE AFTER FILMING F1 MOVIE

The five span 32 years of McLaren history, starting with two MP4/6A cars (chassis numbers 04 and 07 with Honda V12 engines) raced by Austrian Gerhard Berger and tested by Senna during the 1991 title-winning campaign.

Chassis 04 finished second in a one-two at the San Marino Grand Prix with ‌the McLarens lapping the entire field. Chassis 07 came second ‌at McLaren's home British Grand Prix. Both have been in McLaren's possession ever since.

A 2012 McLaren ‌MP4/27A (chassis 01) raced by 2009 world champion Jenson Button and tested by seven-times world champion ‌Hamilton is also for sale.

Two cars raced exclusively by reigning champion Lando Norris in 2021 and 2023 complete the group.

The 2021 McLaren MCL35M took Norris to the podium in Imola, Monaco and Monza while the 2023 MCL37A-03 won successive races in Singapore and Japan and was tested post-season by a roster ‌of drivers including Norris's teammate Oscar Piastri and Mick Schumacher, son of F1 great Michael.

The 2023 McLaren was driven by Pitt in a private test at Austin's Circuit of the Americas in June last year in connection with his starring role in "F1 the Movie" and is the most modern F1 car offered for sale to a private owner. Pitt reportedly took it up to a speed of 197mph (317kph).

"It is incredibly rare for a collector to have the opportunity to acquire race-driven Grand Prix cars directly from the manufacturer and team that built and campaigned them, and that makes this a very special offering," said Hartley.

"These five cars will be offered individually and there is no time pressure whatsoever. Our priority, and McLaren’s, is to find the right homes for them."

Although no prices were given, they are expected to range from 5 million pounds ($6.7 million) to as much as 10 million.

A McLaren MP4-25A raced by Hamilton to victory in Türkiye in 2010 sold for 4.8 million pounds in 2021 while a winning 2001 Ferrari raced by Michael Schumacher fetched $7.5 million in New York in 2017.
