Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert named their first Cameroon squad this week after being appointed as the country’s managerial dream duo this month. Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy is running PSV’s youth team and Alessandro Nesta is in charge of Perugia. When Yaya Touré reaches the current age of all those former players – 42 – he will hang up his boots. Until then, Touré is available for hire.

That, at any rate, was what his agent, Dimitri Seluk, indicated this summer, claiming that was partly why Touré wore the No 42 shirt during his time at Manchester City. Eight glorious years those were, during which Touré established himself as one of the greatest midfielders ever to illuminate the Premier League, along with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, both of whom accepted managerial jobs before even starting their fifth decade. Quitters.

Seluk spouts large quantities of bilge, in fairness. But let us hope that he and his client get their wish on this one because who would not want to see a talent like Touré, just 35, defy the years? Seluk even suggested his man could carry on influencing matches at the very top for at least another three seasons, a claim not especially well supported by the evidence of the Ivorian’s last season at City.

Apparently Seluk has so far been unable to convert elite clubs to his faith in Touré’s imperishability because no Premier League side has seen fit to employ him this summer, not even the endlessly gullible West Ham. No other European club has been won over yet, either, with reports in Spain claiming this week that Barcelona have politely declined. But, of course, there is still time because Touré is not contracted to anyone so can join whenever suits. He is perhaps the most tempting of the array of free agents that could yet enhance your club’s squad.

Or how about Hatem Ben Arfa? Now there is a player who did arouse West Ham’s interest, only for the club to be rebuffed, reportedly, because Ben Arfa hoped to secure a move to Lyon as the replacement for Nabil Fekir. But Lyon may not lose their talisman, after all, so the 31-year-old must be considering other options as he seeks another fresh start in his career, his time at Paris Saint-Germain having ended unhappily, as did stints at some other clubs.

His last competitive action for PSG before becoming embroiled in a dispute with the club was as an 88th-minute substitute in March 2017. He may come with baggage but his talent is special and there will no doubt be many managers who think they can help him fulfil it, as Claude Puel did after picking him up for free when he was released by Newcastle in 2015. The brilliance he showcased at Nice over the following year led PSG to sign him and, although it has hardly been seen since, it still lurks in there somewhere.

Claudio Marchisio is not blessed with Ben Arfa’s gifts but his consistency during more than a decade with Juventus may make him a safer investment even at 32. The winner of seven titles with Juventus made 20 appearances for the Italian club last season and could offer a wealth of savviness to someone as a free agent. An alternative central midfielder might be Stephen Ireland, who is a year younger than the Italian and, well, has a point to prove.

Another former Stoke City enigma, Philipp Wollscheid, is also on the market. The defender is 29 but his career has taken a curious downturn after an initially promising start at Stoke following a £2.5m move from Mainz in 2015. He left Stoke on loan a year later but spells at Wolfsburg and Metz did not work out and he was last seen in action for Warriors Saar in the German futsal championship.

Another former Stoke defender, Glen Johnson, turns 34 this week and has no club. The same goes for Jan Kirchhoff, the former Bayern Munich centre-back or defensive midfielder who helped save Sunderland from relegation two years ago before being struck down by a knee injury. He impressed Bolton enough during a trial last season to be offered a deal until the end of the campaign but that was not renewed so, at 27, he is free to offer his services to others.

So are a pair of former West Brom midfielders, Youssouf Mulumbu and Claudio Yacob. And so is the former West Brom, Sunderland and Everton striker Victor Anichebe, 30, who can take calls after a stint playing in the Chinese second tier. There are lower-league English clubs who could do worse than look at him.

Lionel Messi's Inter Miami on Thursday appointed his fellow Argentine Cristian "Kily" Gonzalez as new head coach of the reigning Major League Soccer champions.

Gonzalez, who hails from superstar Messi's hometown Rosario, will attempt to turn around Miami's poor run of post-World Cup form under interim manager Guillermo Hoyos, AFP said.

"Inter Miami CF announced today that it has reached an agreement with Cristian Alberto 'Kily' Gonzalez to become the Club's new First Team head coach," said a club statement.

Hoyos will remain in post until his replacement's US work permit is approved, it added.

Gonzalez, 52, played left wing for European giants Inter Milan, Valencia and Zaragoza in a career that also included 56 international caps for Argentina between 1995-2005.

He moved into management in 2020, taking the helm at three Argentine club sides before his move to Miami.

The MLS Cup holders have endured a rough spell since the North American league's mid-season World Cup break, despite adding Brazil's Casemiro from Manchester United to a star-packed squad.

The side under Hoyos has lost four of its last five games, remaining second in the Eastern Conference but slipping 10 points adrift of leaders Nashville.

Hoyos on Thursday received a one-game ban and fine for the club's multiple violations of the league's late kick-off policy, his team repeatedly slow to return to the field after half-time breaks.

Hoyos, previously Miami's sporting director and a longtime friend of club captain and talisman Messi, only stepped into the temporary role in April after Javier Mascherano departed the club for "personal reasons."

"Inter Miami would like to especially highlight and thank Hoyos for his commitment and full dedication to the Club, demonstrated by his willingness to assume the role during this period, which began last April," said the club statement.

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Omar Marmoush ‌from Manchester City on a season-long loan, the Premier League club said on Thursday, with the deal including an obligation to make the Egypt forward's move permanent next summer.

British media said the obligation to buy is for a guaranteed £50 million ($67.96 million), with £10m more in add-ons.

"It feels amazing to be here. I'm so excited to get started with the team and I can't wait to meet the fans," the 27-year-old said in a statement.

"Tottenham Hotspur is one of the biggest clubs in England, if not ‌the world, and ‌the project was very attractive to me.

"I've ‌spoken with the head coach (Roberto De Zerbi), I loved what he had to say and I'm sure our passion for the game will go very well together."

Marmoush had a tale of two seasons at City, impressing in his debut 2024-25 campaign before finding consistent playing time elusive behind established players, including leading striker Erling Haaland, in Pep Guardiola's squad last season.

He scored only three goals ‌in 21 Premier League matches for ‌City last term, a far cry from the seven goals in ‌his first half-season at the Etihad Stadium.

De Zerbi, who took ‌over at Spurs in March and helped them avoid relegation, wanted to add forwards to a rebuilt squad after they added midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes plus defender Jan Paul van Hecke for a ‌combined £237 million.

Spurs have also signed Brazilian winger Savio, formerly known as Savinho, from City in a deal reportedly worth around £75 million and a further £10 million in add-ons.

Marmoush is a versatile forward capable of playing centrally or from the left wing, with the Egyptian expected to receive more playing opportunities under De Zerbi at Tottenham.

Spurs have needed more attacking quality after two difficult seasons in which they finished in a lowly 17th place.

Marmoush represented Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, playing five games, albeit without scoring, as they reached the last 16 before being eliminated by eventual runners-up Argentina.

Tottenham got off to a terrible start in their Premier League opener with a 3-0 drubbing at Brentford. They next host Newcastle United on Saturday.

The 2026/27 season has barely begun and Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is already on top of La Liga's goalscoring charts ahead of the visit of promoted side Malaga on Sunday.

The French forward hit a hat-trick as Jose Mourinho's team steamrollered Real Sociedad on Wednesday, securing a second league win from two matches this season.

Mbappe, who won the league's top scorer trophy in both of his two prior seasons at the club, will be licking his lips ready for more with Malaga visiting the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, despite his superbly taken treble, Mourinho said goals are not enough for the forward, who he described as "incredible".

"I prefer 40 (goals) with titles than 60 without titles," Mourinho told reporters.

"I prefer 40 with a lot of work for the team than 60 just playing for himself, as often happens with forwards."

That was not a criticism of Mbappe this season but instead an encouragement for the Frenchman to maintain the level he has shown so far in terms of work-rate.

"I'm very happy with him," continued Mourinho. "From a technical standpoint, there's obviously nothing to say, but in terms of helping the group grow, taking responsibility, working...

"He arrived two days early, and two days early in that pre-season period can mean something positive."

Getting more out of Mbappe, beyond the slew of goals he is guaranteed to provide, may be the key to unlocking a team which boasts great quality and potential but has failed to win a major trophy in the last two seasons.

- New history to create -

"I'm really happy that he made history in the World Cup because there are 25 world champion players, but only one is eternal in football -- the player who has the most goals in the World Cup," said Mourinho, referring to Mbappe's exploits with France this summer.

The 27-year-old won the Golden Boot at the World Cup by notching 10 goals, meaning he has netted 22 at the tournament in his career, keeping him one above Lionel Messi, with both players surpassing Miroslav Klose's previous record of 16.

"I see him really hungry to make history with Real Madrid," continued Mourinho.

Since Mbappe joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, he has watched his former side go on to win the Champions League twice, while Los Blancos' rivals Barcelona have claimed both La Liga titles in that time.

Madrid failed to win a single trophy last season and Mbappe's only silverware with the club is the 2024 UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup, despite scoring 86 goals in just 103 appearances for the club in his first two campaigns.

"This year, we have to win, that's what we all want, and that's what we're going to do," said a determined Mbappe on Real Madrid TV at the start of the season.

The way to do that, Mourinho believes, is through teamwork.

"I always say that with these players, you have to teach them to play as a team and teach them very little from an individual perspective," added the veteran Portuguese coach.

Mourinho, 63, may have the aura and steel needed to bring the club's biggest stars together and get them pulling in the same direction, despite his own struggles in recent years away from Europe's biggest clubs.

During a chaotic 2025/26 campaign it did not always feel like that was the case at Madrid, as Xabi Alonso and then Alvaro Arbeloa came and went, Mbappe's goals alone unable to keep them afloat.

Malaga will provide another opportunity for Mbappe to add to his ever-growing numbers on Sunday, but Mourinho will be looking for more than another hat-trick.
