Moscow has intensified its rhetoric against American military movements in Syria, accusing the US of using internationally banned weapons in air strikes on Deir Ezzor.

The Americans have resumed intense air attacks on Deir Ezzor villages on the eastern bank of the Euphrates “with the use of white phosphorous munitions,” Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated Friday.

She said in her weekly briefing that this was not the first time that the US-led Coalition has used banned weapons.

The Syrian foreign ministry sent two letters to the UN Secretary-General and to President of the UN Security Council, which urged “ending such attacks, investigating these crimes, and punishing the culprits,” Zakharova told reporters in Moscow.

The Russian defense ministry also issued accusations against Washington, saying a US-backed armed group has terrorized civilians and looted humanitarian aid in al-Rukban, a remote desert camp for displaced Syrians near the border with Jordan.

It said that around 6,000 Mahavir as-Saura (Partisans of the Revolution) gunmen present at the camp have looted humanitarian assistance and forced refugees to pay huge sums of money in order to have access to medical clinics.

The ministry held Washington responsible for the deteriorating situation at the camp and urged the US and other western countries to ease the suffering of the displaced Syrians.

It also said that Norwegian non-governmental organizations have shown interest in participating in humanitarian assistance in Syria. A delegation from Norway’s foreign ministry is set to visit Syria in January to discuss the matter.

Col. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev of the Russian defense ministry also said Friday that nearly 7,500 Syrians, including 6,000 people from abroad, have returned to their homes in Syria in the last week alone.

He added that in the past months more than 1.5 million Syrians have returned to their towns.

The European Union on Monday condemned new Israeli measures to tighten control of the West Bank and pave the way for more settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, AFP reported.

"The European Union condemns recent decisions by Israel's security cabinet to expand Israeli control in the West Bank. This move is another step in the wrong direction," EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni told journalists.

The atrocities unleashed on El-Fasher in Sudan's Darfur region last October were a "preventable human rights catastrophe", the United Nations said Monday, warning they now risked being repeated in the neighbouring Kordofan region.

"My office sounded the alarm about the risk of mass atrocities in the besieged city of El-Fasher for more than a year ... but our warnings were ignored," UN rights chief Volker Turk told the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He added that he was now "extremely concerned that these violations and abuses may be repeated in the Kordofan region".

The General Secretariat of the Arab League strongly condemned decisions by Israeli occupation authorities to impose fundamental changes on the legal and administrative status of the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the West Bank, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international law, international legitimacy resolutions, and signed agreements, SPA reported.

In a statement, the Arab League said the measures include facilitating the confiscation of private Palestinian property and transferring planning and licensing authorities in the city of Hebron and the area surrounding the Ibrahimi Mosque to occupation authorities.

It warned of the serious repercussions of these actions on the rights of the Palestinian people and on Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The statement reaffirmed the Arab League’s firm support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the establishment of their independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
