The Saudi Ministry of Justice said Monday that the preservation of the environment for future generations is a “major focus” and the ministry is playing a part in preserving the environment through supporting green projects.
“We have always been interconnected by the environment, we must be mindful of that environment daily and individuals, businesses and government departments must play a collective role to protect it for the benefit of all,” explained the ministry.
The ministry has explored projects from within in order to address their role. The launch of the paperless courts project aimed to digitize transactions and procedures is a living example of the ministry’s initiative in reducing paper waste.
“Digitization of court procedures not only increased the level of performance and efficiency of our institutional work, but also reduced dependency on paper and saved legal entities millions of paper waste,” added the ministry. “We expect that this green project will save 70 million papers by 2020”.
The Personal Status courts, as well as enforcement courts, are spearheading the project designed to enable all branches of the Saudi legal system to handle every application electronically, accelerate processes, guarantee rights, shorten procedures for beneficiaries, and slash costs. The ministry launched the initiative in 2017, with senior figures specifically citing environmental issues as inspiration for digital transformation.
Similarly, the Ministry of Justice has led the way in environmental initiatives, collaborating on nationwide initiatives with state institutions, like the Ministry of Agriculture, to protect fragile ecosystems such as pastures and forests, regulate the production of fertilizers, prevent desertification, and mitigate causes of drought.
In addition to working with other government agencies on awareness initiatives, the ministry of Justice has designed and passed legislation independently, including laws to protect wildlife.
“The ministry is proud to continue playing a leadership role in the kingdom’s efforts to enhance living conditions for the next generation,” the ministry said. “We will work cooperatively, towards the vital end of creating a clean, sustainable environment for the generations that follow”.
