The transitional government in Sudan vowed that it will take immediate and decisive measures against former members of the regime of ousted president Omar al-Bashir who were plotting destabilizing acts in the country.
Following an emergency cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, Sunday, Information Minister Faisal Mohamed Saleh said officials discussed the security and economic situation in the country.
They addressed the “security instability” instigated by groups loyal to Bashir’s dissolved National Congress Party and vowed to effectively act against them.
Sources from the government and Forces of Freedom and Change alliance revealed that Islamist figures from the former regime were planning to take advantage of the authorities’ ban on gatherings, in place over the coronavirus outbreak, to stage a coup against the transitional government and return to power.
The cabinet recommended the arrest of some Islamist members and activists and tightening security measures in anticipation of any potential instability.
Meanwhile, military spokesman Amer Mohammed al-Hassan denied that the army was involved in any coup plot. He also denied that the army had found evidence of a plot from within its ranks.
Allegations of a coup attempt are “false,” he stressed.
The cabinet meeting also urged the need to speed up the formation of an internal security agency and follow up on the latest developments related to the trial of former regime members.
Saleh added that the ministers stressed the need to introduce immediate change in various states to remove members of the former regime that are blamed for obstructing change.
