A west Algeria court applied on Monday for a remand of an Algerian to allow for investigations to take course into the defendant’s publishing of fake news relating to the novel coronavirus.

Authorities considered the published material illicit and aimed at damaging national interest.

This arrest comes hours after ministers amended articles of the Criminal Code related to "criminalizing false news."

The defendant had published that a group of people who were placed under quarantine in a hotel in Oran, a port city in northwest Algeria, were allowed to leave the lockdown before completing the mandatory 14-day stay after authorities intervened.

The circulated fake news sparked widespread rage on social media which triggered the opening of an investigation into the claims. According to sources with knowledge of the matter, it was confirmed that none of the 300 persons quarantined had left the hotel before spending the period dictated by the health ministry.

They all had returned to Algeria from France in the middle of last month, and they were placed in isolation directly. According to sources, they left for their homes a few days ago because no case of the virus was detected among them.

The defendant, an Algerian male in his 30’s, was arrested for allegedly sowing chaos and disrupting social peace through social media. He currently is undergoing investigations pending his trial.

Human rights activists protested against the arrest on the grounds that publishing news or declarations of any gravity should not lead its owner to prison, and that there are alternative temporary penalties provided for by law, including judicial oversight.

A cabinet meeting chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had approved changes to penal code and called for the “criminalization of promoting disinformation with the aim of undermining public order and security.”

Justice Minister Belkacem Zeghmati justified the amendment by pointing out to widespread disinformation threatening security and stability in the country.

The European Union on Monday condemned new Israeli measures to tighten control of the West Bank and pave the way for more settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, AFP reported.

"The European Union condemns recent decisions by Israel's security cabinet to expand Israeli control in the West Bank. This move is another step in the wrong direction," EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni told journalists.

The atrocities unleashed on El-Fasher in Sudan's Darfur region last October were a "preventable human rights catastrophe", the United Nations said Monday, warning they now risked being repeated in the neighbouring Kordofan region.

"My office sounded the alarm about the risk of mass atrocities in the besieged city of El-Fasher for more than a year ... but our warnings were ignored," UN rights chief Volker Turk told the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He added that he was now "extremely concerned that these violations and abuses may be repeated in the Kordofan region".

The General Secretariat of the Arab League strongly condemned decisions by Israeli occupation authorities to impose fundamental changes on the legal and administrative status of the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the West Bank, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international law, international legitimacy resolutions, and signed agreements, SPA reported.

In a statement, the Arab League said the measures include facilitating the confiscation of private Palestinian property and transferring planning and licensing authorities in the city of Hebron and the area surrounding the Ibrahimi Mosque to occupation authorities.

It warned of the serious repercussions of these actions on the rights of the Palestinian people and on Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The statement reaffirmed the Arab League’s firm support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the establishment of their independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
