A Yemeni ship that had been lost at sea after its motor malfunctioned return to shore off the Mahra province.
The wooden vessel, with 15 passengers on board, had gone missing for 12 days after it departed Hadramawt to Socotra island. It set sail on May 16 and was scheduled to arrive three days later, but contact was eventually lost with it, possibly due to poor weather.
Official authorities were criticized for their handling of the case, with many accusing them of negligence.
The “Al-Manar” arrived in al-Mahra hours after Minister of Fish Wealth Fahd Kafayen announced that he had made contact with the missing vessel. He assured that the crew were safe and that the ship had undergone repairs.
The coast guard declared the vessel missing on May 18 and was last seen 30 nautical miles off Socotra.
With an insufficient number of flights, people often resort to sailing in wooden ships from the archipelago to Hadramawt or al-Mahra to purchase their daily needs or to access the rest of the country.
