The coronavirus pandemic has forced governments all over the world to bar international travel, dealing a blow to tourism. On the upside, it has revived internal tourism.
In Saudi Arabia, the locals have turned to exploring the country’s numerous landmarks as authorities have gradually eased virus restrictions.
They have renewed interest in the southern mountainous regions because of their noticeable lower temperatures than other parts of the Kingdom.
Ahmed al-Jaeed, a tour guide, expected internal environmental tourism to flourish in coming weeks.
He told Asharq Al-Awsat: “The people’s travel between cities is important, but nature will remain their top passion. They want to swim, dive and explore.”
They have realized the worth of these activities during their time in confinement, he added.
He noted, however, that the total outlook of the tourism sector will become clear next month after curfew is lifted.
Tourists won’t fully enjoy their experience if they cannot witness nature at night due to the curfew, he explained.
The Ministry of Tourism has launched the “Saudi Summer” campaign to encourage tourism along the Red Sea, from Abha to the Tabuk region.
Jaeed said the Saudis will opt to travel by car, which will allow them to discover the Kingdom as they travel to villages and farmlands.
He recommended the mountainous regions of Taif, al-Baha, Abha, Khamis Mushait and others as tourist destinations.
A number of Saudis told Asharq Al-Awsat that they were eager to visit the mountains. A government employee said he is planning a trip with his family to Abha to enjoy its beautiful nature, noting it moderate temperature during the summer.
