Lebanese Kinda El-Khatib turned on Monday from a detained political activist critic of President Michel Aoun and Hezbollah to a suspect charged with collaborating with Israel.
After four days of investigations, Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Fadi Akiki charged El-Khatib, 24, with illegally crossing into Israel during a visit to Jordan earlier this year and "dealing with spies of the Israeli enemy."
The judge referred the suspect to a military investigative judge for questioning. The military judge is expected to issue a formal arrest warrant.
Khatib is also accused of facilitating contact between Lebanese suspect Charbel Hajj and the Israeli enemy through securing Hajj’s media appearance on Israeli Channel 11, using her relationship with one Israeli journalist.
Judicial sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that accusations referred to Khatib lie under the specialty of the military judiciary and are not linked to her political views against the government or other parties.
“Charges against El-Khatib came after preliminary investigations proved the suspect entered the Occupied Territories in January 2020 and met with Israeli figures,” the source said.
Khatib was detained last week with her brother, who was later released. According to local media reports, she had visited Israel by crossing from Jordan.
She has been active on social media, where she harshly criticized Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group and its strong ally, Lebanese President Michel Aoun. Hezbollah and Israel fought a monthlong war in 2006.
Her case comes as multiple activists have been arrested lately for making anti-government statements against President Aoun, the government, or Hezbollah.
On Monday, a number of protesters demonstrated outside the military court in Beirut in solidarity with Khatib.
Salwa M., one of Kinda’s comrades, told Asharq Al-Awsat that her arrest aims to silence all voices that oppose the presidential term and the government.
“Before her arrest, Hezbollah supporters responded to her tweets by accusing her of collaborating with Israel. Is this coincidence that Kinda is arrested following a post on social media and then discover she was an Israeli agent?” Salwa said.
