Saudi Qiddiya Investment Company (QIC), the developer of the Qiddiya project, has awarded a three-year contract to Shibh al-Jazira Contracting Company (Sajco) to establish stormwater drainage, roads, and bridges.
The project, valued at $186.6 million, comes within QIC’s aim to achieve its construction goals according to the predetermined schedule despite the challenges posed by the global crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
CEO of QIC Michael Reininger announced that the year 2020 has presented some unprecedented circumstances, however, Qiddiya has proudly sustained a “business as usual” protocol, signing its second major construction contract with Sajco and achieving yet another major construction milestone for this year.
"This stormwater drainage, roads and bridges will provide access to all facilities and assets on the lower plateau of our site, enabling the transport of key construction materials to the various development sites within Qiddiya’s lower plateau," he stated.
The scope of work includes the development of 45 km-long roads and seven bridges and grade-separated interchanges, said the statement from QIC.
These will provide access from the main approach highway, deep into Qiddiya’s Resort Core with its theme parks and other attractions, towards the Motion Zone, home to world-class motor racing facilities, and Qiddiya’s spectacular Golf and Equestrian Community with its championship courses and beautiful residential offerings.
To build these roads, Sajco will excavate 6.5 million cubic meters of earth, utilize more than 80,000 cubic meters of concrete for the bridges and associated structures and 1.2 million square meters of asphalt for the road surfaces, it added.
The construction will begin in July and will be completed by mid-May 2023, with 1,000 skilled workers and engineers to complete the task.
In June 2019, QIC unveiled the master plan of the mega entertainment city, which has been divided into five major development zones, namely Resort Core, City Center, Eco Core, Motion Core, and the Golf and Residential Neighborhood.
With that, Qiddiya became the capital of entertainment, sports, and arts in the Kingdom by offering a set of facilities that will provide diverse investment, career opportunities, and unique experiences for visitors, in line with Vision 2030.
The general plan of the project was developed in conjunction with Danish architecture and building company Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), which is constructing tower blocks and arts, cultural and sports facilities.
The construction of the project will be through the development of a network of green areas in line with these patterns to provide visitors with the ability to enjoy activities.
Qiddiya is located 45 kilometers west of Riyadh, over an area of 334 sq km with a development area that constitutes 30 percent of the total area. The remaining area of the project will be allocated for ancient natural monuments.
The first phase of the project, expected to be completed by 2022, will include Six Flags project which will provide a group of fun and entertainment activities divided into six regions, including water.
