The Arab Parliament has demanded an immediate and urgent action by the United Nations to end Houthi violations against Yemeni lawmakers and provide them with legal protection.
These demands were made in a letter sent by Speaker of the Arab Parliament Mishaal bin Fahm al-Salami to the UN Secretary General, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Salami has strictly denounced the militias’ ongoing violations and criminal acts against MPs, including the Speaker, all of whom have rejected the coup.
He pointed out in his letter that militias are seizing the MPs’ homes and confiscating their money and property.
The most recent acts of violations were Houthis seeking to strip 12 MPs of immunity ahead of putting them on trial, confiscating the house of MP Yasser al-Awadhi, as well as the homes of his family members and all their property in Sanaa.
Salami stressed his rejection of their criminal practices, terrorist acts and grave violations against MPs elected by the people.
He shed light on the unconstitutional and unlawful mock trials carried out by Houthis and the death sentences issued against lawmakers, journalists, politicians and whoever opposes their terrorist practices.
The militias insist on holding onto their crimes, rejecting all international efforts to reach peace in the country, the Speaker added.
He further noted that all their acts are a flagrant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, international norms and conventions, UN resolutions and international treaties, as well as the IPU system.
