Aviation sector experts expressed optimism towards Saudi Arabia taking the decision to open all air, land and sea ports to citizens to travel back and forth from the Kingdom as of the beginning of 2021.
They confirmed that the lifting of travel restrictions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic will have a positive effect on airlines and the travel sector in general. They said that removing the ban will also aid in recovery from the recession that touched affiliated sectors, such as the logistics support services.
According to specialists, 2021 is going to be the year airlines restore the balance and make up for losses incurred during the six-month hiatus they endured through the pandemic.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecast showed that airlines are set to lose $84 billion in 2020. In 2021, IATA forecast losses at $15.8 billion.
Saudi Arabia on Sunday announced it will partially lift travel restrictions and permit international flights to operate to and from the Kingdom starting September 15.
However, it will lift all travel restrictions associated with the pandemic as of January 1, 2021, a source at the Ministry of Interior confirmed to the Saudi Press Agency.
Hussein Al-Zahrani, Chairman of the Aviation and Support Services Committee at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jeddah, reaffirmed that the lifting of the travel ban will have a positive economic impact on the aviation sector and Saudi Arabia.
Al-Zahrani noted that the air travel market will begin to recover gradually. First with the return of Saudis stuck abroad and the resumption of international flights.
He clarified that airlines have had to experience exceptionally difficult times through the last six months, during which they had to continue spending on the wages of employees without any revenues being made.
The official praised the SANED government program which assisted private sector companies throughout the pandemic.
