Historic FA Cup Sold for £760,000 at Auction

West Ham United co-owner David Gold has sold the oldest surviving Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup) trophy for 760,000 pounds ($978,000) at an auction.

According to Reuters, Gold bought the trophy, which was the second version of the FA Cup presented to winners of the competition between 1896 and 1910, 15 years ago for 478,000 pounds during his time as chairman of Birmingham City. The original version of the trophy was stolen in 1895.

"The trophy charts the transformation of the game from one dominated by public school players to the popular mass participation sport that it became and remains," auction house Bonhams said. The cup had been on display in the National Football Museum in Manchester. Sheffield United was the first winners of the new trophy in 1896, defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the final. Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur were among the other first-time winners of the trophy.

Chris Wood is set to return from his lengthy injury spell in a big boost for New Zealand ahead of the World Cup, as well as for his club Nottingham Forest.

The 34-year-old has been sidelined since October due to a knee ⁠injury. He underwent ⁠surgery in December.

His return was confirmed by Forest coach Vitor Pereira in a press conference ahead of the club's Europa ⁠League quarter-final first leg match against FC Porto on Thursday, Reuters reported.

"He's started training with the team and is available for the game," Pereira said on Wednesday.

Wood, who is the All Whites' record goalscorer with 45 goals, played for ⁠New ⁠Zealand when they last qualified for the World Cup in 2010 in South Africa. New Zealand are in Group G at the World Cup, where they will face off against Belgium, Egypt and Iran in June.

Monaco's Valentin Vacherot could barely have scripted his second career win over a top-five player better after he defeated world number five Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(6) 7-5 in front of a joyous home crowd at the Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday.

The victory made the 27-year-old just the second Monegasque, after his half-brother and coach Benjamin Balleret, to reach the Monte-Carlo Masters third round, Reuters reported.

It also marked his second win over a top-five ⁠ranked opponent following ⁠his triumph over 24-times Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic en route to his maiden ATP title at the Shanghai Masters last year.

"If someone had told me that my first top-five win of the season, second ⁠after Shanghai, would be here on a night session, on the center court that I've been hitting on since I'm six years old, I wouldn't have believed it," Vacherot said on court.

"Maybe people don't know that I love clay. I grew up playing here for 18 years before going to college and learning how to play on hard courts. ⁠But this ⁠is where I learned how to play tennis.

"Let's say I needed a set and a half to get on it in the first round. And now my game is back."

Vacherot, who rocketed from number 204 in the world to number 40 after his win in Shanghai and also reached the third round of the Australian Open this year, takes on Poland's Hubert Hurkacz later on Thursday.

AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus said they will play a series of pre-season friendlies in August at Perth Stadium after plans to stage an Italian top-flight match at the Australian venue were scrapped late last year.

Serie A had been in talks to stage a game between ⁠AC Milan and ⁠Como in Perth in February but called it off in December citing conditions imposed by the Asian Football Confederation.

The game would have been the ⁠first major European domestic league fixture to be played outside its home country.

AC Milan take on Inter Milan on August 5. Inter then face Juventus three days later and Juventus play Serie B side Palermo on August 11, Reuters reported.

Western Australia Tourism Minister Reece ⁠Whitby ⁠said that the games would be a boost to the tourist sector.

"We are consistently seeing the positive impact these major events have on our communities - boosting our tourism sector, supporting local jobs and businesses, and diversifying Western Australia's economy," Whitby said on Thursday.
