Algeria has deeply deplored the serious violations of the ceasefire Friday in El Guerguerat in the south-west of Western Sahara, in the south-west of Western Sahara, calling for the “immediate cessation” of military operations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
"Algeria deeply deplores the serious violations of the ceasefire that took place this morning in the Guerguerat region in the Western Sahara, and calls for the immediate cessation of these military operations, whose repercussions would affect the stability of the entire region," the statement read.
This came after Morocco said its troops have launched an operation in a no man’s land on the southern border of Western Sahara to end what it described as provocations by the Polisario Front.
In this regard, Algeria called on the two parties to show responsibility, restraint, and full respect for the military agreement No. 1 signed between them and the UN.
Algeria said it expects the Secretary-General of the UN and the United Nations mission for the referendum in Western Sahara to carry out their tasks without restrictions or obstacles, and to show the impartiality required by the current developments.
It further renewed its appeal to the UN Secretary-General to appoint a personal envoy as soon as possible and to effectively resume the political talks, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly, and the principles of the UN charter.
For its part, “Talaie El Hourriyet” party described the Moroccan operation as a "flagrant military violation" and “a breach to the ceasefire”.
The party, founded by former prime minister Ali Benflis, said that direct talks between the two conflicting parties under a UN supervision is the sole option that would lead to a permeant political solution.
The majority of Algerian politicians supported this stance, noting that Algeria is a main backer of the Polisario Front.
