Libyans have been anticipating the distribution mechanism of 2.7 million vaccine doses contracted by the country.
The Libyan Scientific Advisory Committee on the coronavirus pandemic said in its latest report that the country registered 680 new virus cases and seven deaths.
This came after the country registered 762 cases on Wednesday and up to 670 earlier on Tuesday.
The new numbers raised the total number of infections in Libya to 85,000 cases, while the death toll stood at 1,219.
For its part, the government said it signed contracts to purchase up to 2,724,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines that will be first provided to the most vulnerable groups including doctors, medical staff, elderly people, and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses, in addition to pregnant women.
Head of the Advisory Committee Khalifa al-Bakoush said Libya signed a deal with the COVAX facility to receive two million doses of vaccine as soon as they are made available.
COVAX is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the World Health Organization (WHO) – working in partnership with developed and developing country vaccine manufacturers.
It aims at providing almost two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2021.
