The departure of Government of National Accord (GNA) leader, Fayez al-Sarraj, from Libya and his tasking of his deputy, Ahmed Maiteeq, with his duties continues to stir debate in the country.
Sarraj did not disclose the purpose or destination of his trip. Sources close to him said he was traveling to London with his wife on a private visit.
This is the first time since his appointment in 2015 that Sarraj delegates his duties to his deputy.
Maiteeq, for his part, has not commented on the decision.
The GNA has also not commented on the issue, refraining from revealing whether Sarraj intends to return to the country as it approaches a transition of power with the recent appointment of a new head of the Presidential Council and prime minister-designate.
Some sources close to Sarraj have said that he was in Italy for surgery.
Sarraj has not contacted Mohammed al-Menfi, the new Presidential Council chief, or Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, the PM-designate.
Separately, Egypt is planning to partially reopen its embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, after a seven-year closure.
In a sign of Egypt’s new rapprochement with authorities in western Libya, a diplomatic and security delegation arrived in Tripoli on Monday for a visit that will last several days.
It is the second such visit in as many months.
An informed Egyptian source told the MENA news agency that the delegation will tackle the technical preparations to resume Egyptian diplomatic operations in Libya.
The delegation will discuss preparations and logistical arrangements and the timing of the reopening of the embassy in Tripoli and consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi.
GNA Foreign Minister Mohamed Siala met with the delegation on Monday.
