Egypt on Friday received more coronavirus vaccines from Moderna through the COVAX initiative and in cooperation with the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), Minister of Higher Education and Acting Health Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar said.
Abdel-Ghaffar said Cairo received 3,575,040 Moderna jabs, the country’s second and largest shipment of the US-manufactured vaccine within a week.
Late last month, Egypt received its first shipment of the Moderna vaccine comprising 784,280 doses, offered from Canada.
Abdel-Ghaffar said the vaccine is approved for emergency use by the World Health Organization and is administered as two doses, 21 days apart.
The shipment will be tested in the authority’s labs before being distributed to vaccination centers across the country.
The Health Ministry announced 911 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, upping the total number of infections since the outbreak of the COVID-19 disease in the country to 334,751.
It said 57 patients have died from complications caused by the virus, raising the death toll to 18,889.
A statement issued by the Cabinet said that Egypt managed in a short time to provide all types of vaccines, including Sputnik, Sinopharm, AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson to the population.
The government again urged citizens to register online and get vaccinated.
