Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product grew by 6.8% in Q4 2021, its fastest expansion in six years, official flash estimates showed on Thursday.
This rate brought the overall growth in 2021 to 3.3%.
The quarter’s growth was driven by a 10.8% rise in oil activities and a five percent increase in non-oil activities, the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) said. Government services increased by 2.4%.
GDP growth for the full year was a marked turn from the 4.1% contraction in 2020, when oil crashed and economies across the world were hammered by the pandemic’s impact.
The estimated 3.3% expansion came above the government's forecast of 2.9% growth for 2021.
Quarter-on-quarter, seasonally adjusted real GDP grew by 1.6% in the fourth quarter, the authority said.
This increase in GDP was a result of the growth in oil activities by 1.8%, non-oil activities by 1.5% and government services activities by 1.2%.
On the other hand, Saudi Arabia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) grew 11.2% in December compared to the same period in 2020, GASTAT showed.
The positive performance was mainly due to the mining and quarrying sector, which grew 11.6% year-on-year, in light of the Kingdom’s increased oil production.
In December, oil production reached a level of over 10 million barrels per day.
Annual growth in manufacturing stood at 9.7%, while electricity and gas supplies grew 12%, according to the published data.
